It’s so infuriating when a perfectly enjoyable ride gets marred by people acting like donkeys.
I think this one is a perfect example of my favorite contraction: jack’hole

You’re just fishing for compliments, aren’t you?
The correct response is, of course, “I was just pulling through. I couldn’t possibly drop you with my commuting rig.”
You are not responsible for easily bruised egos.
Heh, no not fishing.
. I get passed by faster people all the time.
Yeah, I just waved him off. The witty responses always come much too late. I guess I should count myself lucky that this is rare enough that I don’t have ready retorts.

No, no, no. The humor value here is just too tremendous. Why would you want to miss such an opportunity? ELITE rider is so dense as to not conceive of a commuter passing them – and then bitches at you because, well, you did not behave like an ELITE rider????? I think this wins the award for the best Missed Connection post (at least of the last five minutes).

ParticipantDoes the guy have Strava? Shouldn’t there be a chance you’ll get matched up rides?

You whined something about being a “cat 2, just trying to get home”.
My suggested clever response (or maybe not that clever): “You’re a cat too? Well, meow then.”

ParticipantCar in near lane stops to let me cross the GW Crossing of Doom. Car behind her honks in anger and swerves to pass her. Once cars in far lane stop too, I cross. I’d prefer if you not stop, dear, because it’s safer if I just wait for a gap, but you were being nice. So I waved a thanks to you, and then offered an appropriate hand gesture to the guy who passed you.
I then stop to check on the lady in the car with the smashed front sitting on the grass next to the intersection. She was okay, just waiting for a towtruck. She told me she had rear-ended someone who had stopped at the crosswalk to let a cyclist cross. She was in surprisingly good spirits for someone who just mashed her car up.
Also, jogger on the trail, don’t salmon, especially between me and pedestrians I’m passing. It’s stupid.

I don’t know why you chased me down to berate me for “trying to drop you instead of pulling through” when I passed you at the top of the corkscrew.
You whined something about being a “cat 2, just trying to get home”. I don’t care, but I also don’t believe it. A cat 2 (really, a cat-anything>6) racer is gonna have enough security not to care if someone riding faster passes them.
I had some rumpledonkskin do something similar the other day (minus the “cat 2, just trying to get home” spiel) and the only response I had, outside of laughing at him and how ridiculous the situation was, is this:

ParticipantTo the driver on her cell phone entering the 25th St. circle at speed from New Hampshire Ave by the Saudi Embassy last night: sorry I yelled at you, but I was a little startled by the fact that you appeared to be TRYING TO KILL ME.

I feel the same way and, frankly, that’s how I approach this intersection as a driver as well. I really hate not stopping, but honestly I’d rather inconvenience a ped/cyclist at the crossing than get rear-ended at 50mph. I will, however, stop if there are no cars close behind me.

One thing I do not miss about commuting on the W&OD is all the wannabe racer-boys and their fragile, fragile egos.
I’m no threat to their egos (trust me) so I’ve never had a problem with that, but I do wish they’d call out their passes, and that they’d wait until the other lane was clear before “attacking”.

And they all make that right turn from the left lane of the circle, too.

ParticipantYou: The guy along the MVT this AM right here who seemed to be using a small garden trowel to collect a water bottle full of the soil/sand runoff that collects there.
What were you doing that for? Curious minds want to know!
At first I saw you on your knees at the side of the trail and your bike a few feet away and was going to slow to offer assistance with a bike repair, but that was not necessary.
