Me: Just another commuter (a plus one to you)It was good to see you volunteers out there today. There was someone who looked suspiciously like dbb near the Humpback Bridge this morning, but we old folks with peppery beards all look alike. A shout out to the lady wearing the Bike Arlington jersey at the Key Bridge location. Thanks to everyone. More data make make better cycling.
Can I put in an extra shout out to those counting the evening commute, who got stuck with the unexpected but
short storm. September 14, 2013 at 7:17 pm #981297APKhaos
ParticipantThe bad one:
You: Guy in full team kit and helmet walking on MVT between 14thSt Bridge and Gravelly Pt who DIVED across the trail to the grass on the left just after I’d called a pass. No look, no hearing, no clue. Suspect he was focused on finding something he’s dropped off his bike.
Me: Locked up and in the grass. The good one:
Me: Four Mile Run and Walter Reed Intersection [kryptonite – had my first and only ‘unclip…fail…flop’ there. Crossing light green, I move off, clip in, and discover that the chain has dropped. Try to recover it, fail, and flop in the crossing with a locked chain.
You: Guy waiting at the crossing gets off his bike and comes over to help sort out my chain routing mess. Great stuff and much appreciated!!September 15, 2013 at 12:47 am #981305mstone
ParticipantYou: my new long sleeve wool jersey.
Me: pissed at FedEx for giving you to somebody else.

ParticipantWere any of you on the Mt Vernon Trail between the airport and Old Town today around 10am? Something really strange went down and I need to see if anyone else witnessed it.

Nope, I was there much earlier… probably around 7:30 am. Do tell though, I am really curious.

ParticipantUFO? Unicorn sighting? Naked person? There actually was a very creepy incident there back in 2005. I hope it’s nothing like that:

Nothing quite like that, thank g-d, but let’s just say it could have went that way had cooler heads not prevailed.

ParticipantYou: perfectly flat frog on the W&OD out past Leesburg.
Me: I had nothing to do with it.
Sorry, dude.
Bonus missed connection: guy on the tall wheel unicycle.

I wonder if he’s a buddy of perfectly flat bird on the Mt. Vernon boardwalk.

More likely that flat frog is a distant relative of the fried frog from Wallops.

Hmm. Or maybe the same frog.

Let’s see, if we can get the coordinates of flat frog, maybe someone from Orbital can match that to the trajectory of fried frogs descent, assuming it did not burn up on re-entry.

ParticipantYou: the roadie in the capo kit, knee-high compression socks and carbon speed bike.
Me: on my commuter bike, just trying to enjoy my ride home, celebrating the fact that I was backpack-free this afternoon.I don’t know why you chased me down to berate me for “trying to drop you instead of pulling through” when I passed you at the top of the corkscrew. You had slowed way down. The road was clear and I called out that I was passing on your left. I was waiting behind you because I didn’t think that passing on the turns was a very responsible thing to do. Moreover, “Pulled through!?!” Jeeez; this is the Custis trail! I wasn’t racing you, nor was I drafting you (which is what I meant when I said “trying to drop you???”); I was riding home and, I’m sorry, but you were simply riding slower. You whined something about being a “cat 2, just trying to get home”. I don’t care, but I also don’t believe it. A cat 2 (really, a cat-anything>6) racer is gonna have enough security not to care if someone riding faster passes them.

Ah, feels better to get that off my chest
It’s so infuriating when a perfectly enjoyable ride gets marred by people acting like donkeys. I don’t know what I was supposed to do here so that I wouldn’t have bruised this dude’s ego. Maybe passing at the top of a hill is a little too in-your-face? Le sigh.

ParticipantYou’re just fishing for compliments, aren’t you?
The correct response is, of course, “I was just pulling through. I couldn’t possibly drop you with my commuting rig.”
You are not responsible for easily bruised egos.

One thing I do not miss about commuting on the W&OD is all the wannabe racer-boys and their fragile, fragile egos.
