This is my version of a “missed connection” post…

You: headphones, no helmet passing me on the right in the bike lane on Clarendon Blvd. the morning of May 9 about 8 am.

    Me: riding safely as usual

You should call your damn passes – especially when passing on the right. I could have swerved right into you.

    Dumbass.

Mstone- do you commute from Vienna? You and I seem to have to same commute! I ride a shiny fendered bike. You? See you out there!

I start in Fair Oaks and end up in Ballston, usually on a black bike with a few bits of orange trim and front & rear racks. And fenders, of course. Side note: my back fender is a bit beat up because I kept putting off adjusting it when I moved to the 37mm tires. Turns out if you get something wedged in a plastic fender on a rear wheel you can actually end up with a fender inversion such that the back of the fender ends up sandwiched between the tire and the top of the fender. Luckily you can also pop a plastic fender back into shape (mostly). So I did eventually get around to adjusting them, but on the side of the towpath instead of on the porch.

Cool, nice longish commute there. And yeah, would’ve been better on a porch drinking a beer, eh?

Had a nice chat with a motorcycle cop in Clarendon yesterday evening as he pulled up to a light next to me. As we pulled away I told he to be safe, and he offered me the same advice… sort of a nice exchange for once in Clarendon… normally it’s me getting doored, or right hooked, or stepped into and yelled at.

Caught up with a shirtless FTC employee on the mall portion of my commute. Very nice guy on a frankenstein green bike – maybe I’ll see him another day.

Dear US Government SUV driver at 15th & K, I know you have good insurance, but I would prefer you didn’t pull out in front of myself and anoter cyclist when we had the ROW at a green light.

Definitely saw him. He passed me back by the bridge, but he did call his pass if I recall. So no complaints from me.

Was he wearing ONLY bibs? I crossed paths with a dude this morning on the W&OD in Shirlington wearing the Italian Tuxedo (only bibs), riding no hands and talking on his cell phone. The guy in front of me turned around and asked if that was a Chippendale?

You: threading the needle on the *blind* curve just south of Gravelly Pt heading towards the airport.
Me: very surprised to see an on-coming cyclist in my lane as I come around the curve.

Don’t ever, ever do this again. What were you thinking?!

As a side note: the trail is way too narrow along that section.

Especially when a panic ditching involves head-on traffic of the Parkway.

I was here, and there were cars on both sides (which have stop signs). Car on the right waited for me, the car on the left didn’t and gunned a left turn. And then stopped suddenly (what, 30 ft later?) to make an immediate left into the 7-Eleven without signalling across a double yellow. I had to swerve last second to the right, fortunately there wasn’t another car on the right. I spent quite a few seconds afterwards deliberating whether or not to turn back around to address the driver but a mix of apathy and *something else* let me proceed on my journey.

Reminds me of a guy I’ve seen a couple times during the afternoon commute home along the MVT. Topless, wearing only American flag speedos and nothing else except shoes and some sort of fanny pack IIRC. Can’t remember what kind of bike he was on, but I think it was a 1980’s vintage road bike. Odd. Just odd.

Can’t imagine why, or that the specific bike matters in this case.

No joke, I saw that same dude and the first thing I thought was – why am I not doing that? You folks better thank your personal g-d that, thanks to moving to the Great White North, I won’t be subjecting you to this next summer.
