You: last night on the Custis, a great blue heron, standing right in the middle of the trail, acting just like a Canada Goose. The MVT is down thataway…

To the guy in the Union 76 Jersey studying your map at the WOD/N. Van Buren Street trailhead yesterday evening (9/09): I would have stopped to see if you needed help if you hadn’t earlier TWICE blown by me at speed without warning, one of those times dangerously close because you were simultaneously threading the needle between me and a pedestrian headed the other way.

I hope you stayed good and lost long enough to erase whatever PR you seemed to be going for.

I totally saw that guy studying his map yesterday. I was about to ask him if he needed help but was distracted by an errant car. I’m glad I didn’t! :)

That was probably me, I was in a bit of a…. yawn…. fog having worked a 30hr weekend and a long Monday… apologies… what part of the trail was it? I seem to recall hearing something and I looked around but chalked it up to geese fighting…. not that you sound like a goose…. oh god, I’m digging a hole right?

No worries, it was right by the 14th Street Bridge drop off. I shouldn’t be that hard to spot, I’m only the largest rider on the trail and at Hains Point in spandex.

    From yesterday’s ride home:

You: riding with an inflated exercise ball creatively strapped to your rear rack.
Good work! Glad there wasn’t much wind for you!

You: Parking enforcement officer, on a segway, on your phone, zooming up the wrong way in the middle of K Street to pass both lanes of cars stopped at the light.
Please don’t, for so many reasons.

    “Its not DC, buddy”

This AM, walking (can I include these here?) across Little River at Hummer. There was a huge gardening truck in the crosswalk. Not a foot or two into the crosswalk, but blocking the entire crosswalk. I told the guy he can’t block the crosswalk like that. If I heard right (and I think I did) he said “Its not DC buddy”

I took a pic of his license plate.

I can A. Call the gardening co that employs him and complain about him in particular – but they might not do anything, and if they did, he might come after me B. I can call them and complain without being specific, and hope they lecture all their drivers – probably will do zero good C. I can call the Fairfax County Police with details – at least in that case if he comes after me, theres a police record. Probably the police will do nothing D. I can all community relations cop and ask about crosswalk enforcement generally – probably will do no good E. I can call Penny Gross’s office (supervisor for Mason District) and kvetch about ped unfriendliness in FFX county generally, and how do you think you will ever make that Tysons project work if the County has a reputation as being weak on enforcing ped protections – but as a FABB member, and on other grounds I have other priorities with Penny – and after all we DID just get those nice new sidewalks, and I even got FCDOT to put in some of those yellow diamond signs with a stick figure of a ped on it on Hummer Road.

    Or I can kvetch here.

Or you can do A/B and if you’re unsatisfied, post the unfavorable review on yelp (and other review sites…)

    I vote A and C.

Or F. Find the truck parked at night and slash the tires.

Depending on the tone of the conversation, I am guessing that he was just being a jerk (unless he didn’t have room to back up) and probably warranted a sarcastic response like: “Oh, I didn’t realize that in Virginia you’re SUPPOSED to block the crosswalk!”. You’re better off kvetching (I’m getting hungry so I’m reading that as “ketchup-ing”) here than fighting that battle.

If there was something malicious, even as little as him revving his engine as you passed by in front of him (if you did walk around his truck), I’d call the police and report him. There’d be no need for you to call his company as the police would do that for you.

No physical vandalism needed. Just follow Fred’s (from Yehuda Moon) example with ball bearings. The series is near the end of the year.

    Oh dear how sad.

Thats not me. Fairfax County keeps radicalizing me, but not that way.

I’d call his employer and complain (in a nice tone). Last thing they want is 1) bad public relations or 2) police tickets.

To the guy with a backpack on the fat bike using the W&OD gravel side path who I paced doing about 20MPH: props. It was damn hot this afternoon and I was pretty beat on the road bike.

edit to clarify: I was on the lovely smooth pavement, not the gravel :)

Mstone- do you commute from Vienna? You and I seem to have to same commute! I ride a shiny fendered bike. You? See you out there!
