I’m late getting back to this thread, but it was loads of fun riding with Kidical Mass on Sunday! Thanks for starting and leading these, Dasgeh. It was fantastic to see many friends there with their kids and so many families out riding together.

It was great to discover new bike routes too. I might try to incorporate spraygrounds into some of my summer rides – that made the ride home a lot more pleasant!

…aaaand a time lapse. It’s still 10 minutes, and you get the same effect by standing on the MVT on a sunday, but enjoy!

    Video!

Hat tip to Megan (& Mark, DaveK and Mrs. DaveK) for this complete video: http://vimeo.com/71060743#

My family’s camera worked for part of the ride. It was at a weird angle, which I haven’t figured out how to fix. So I threw together this quick video (the music is the song I had on that computer that just happened to be the right length).

I was hoping to get photos from others (especially from the start/end) to splice together the whole ride. So if you have anything, please let me know… Also, comments or solution to the angle issue welcome.

    Shoot straight.

It’s a bit of a glib answer, but you should try to do all your framing and setup in camera. The more post work you need to do, the more it’s going to lose quality. If you really want to rotate the video an arbitrary angle to get it to line up with the horizon, I think you’ll need some motion graphics software like After Effects or FCP Motion

And… we need suggestions for the September 22 “Harvest Ride”. Thoughts?

I would suggest riding to a corn maze but I’m guessing there aren’t any nearby…

I’ll throw one out: ride from Bon Aire Park (where the Custis meets the W&OD) to the Falls Church farmers market. It’s 2.3 miles. So it’d be a meet, ride, meet a little later, ride back sort of deal.

    Too much trail? Too out-and-back?

This could be fun, but more as a WeeHoo/trailer ride, not really Kidical-Mass-y. I believe the closest are past Dulles.

So… would any of you kidical mass regulars be up for a super-special bonus ride that would be filmed by real film people? It would have to be August 24 or 25.

BTW, I mapped the least hilly route (I think) from Rock Spring to Potomac Overlook. I’ve never biked this area, so I need serious recon, but it would let us hit 2 trails that I doubt we’d otherwise get to: Rock Spring and Donaldson Run. The route only violates my “no more than 5% grade up” rule for a short section, and it doesn’t go over 6% grade. I have no idea how someone would get back to Rock Spring without going up a steep hill. I’ll just throw this out there in case someone has thoughts: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3035455

My family and I are biking to lockhouse 6 from Fairfax on the 23rd and staying the weekend in the lockhouse. You are welcome to bike out the canal from Georgetown and meet us on Saturday morning if you would like a tour of the lockhouse. The trip is about 5 miles from the waterfront park on K/Water street to Magazine lock (6). and it is under a 2% grade the entire way.
If you want part of the ride in Arlington, you can always jump across the Chain bridge (1/2 mile south of the lockhouse) and do some WeeHoo/trail-a-bike/cargobike runs up and down 41st street.

I’m definitely interested if we can make it. 25th is probably better for us. What would the video be used for?

    Howdy,

I’m in planning mode for the September ride. How about this route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3168165

    Highlights:
    * meet at Arlington’s newest community center, Arlington Mill (*Need to confirm the playground will be open for meet up)
    * bike past 2 of Arlington’s community gardens
    * end at the Columbia Pike farmer’s market

Note: there is a very short section of this route that violates my max 5% grade rule. There are also 2 short sections which go less than -5% grade – I’ll recon to make sure those are ok. The overall route is 3.2 miles.

Thoughts? Will anyone want to visit the community gardens, or should we just ride past and admire the bounty of nature?
