ParticipantYou mean Highland Park?
This ride is covers some of the best cycling Arlington has to offer both the young and the young at heart.
When: Sunday, July 21, 2013 9:00am (roll out 9:15am)
Meet: Virginia Highlands Park (the Southern-most playground, near 18th St. S
Parking: Off of Hayes Street, just South of 15th St S. or off of 18th St SEnd: Virginia Highlands Sprayground
MVT seems good. The access path to Crystal City, once you go in the tunnel under the railroad tracks – at the other end is a not-visible-from-the-tunnel very steep incline. She might want to be ready for that.
I would avoid Costco area. I dont think it will be open then… but once it opens, the traffic there is slightly mental. Hayes seems like a good choice.

Sort of last minute, but I just realized that I don’t know a “wife-who-is-semicomfortable-with-towing-kid” friendly route from the VRE station on Crystal Drive to Hayes park (coming from Clarendon I figure that the MVT is the safest way to get to crystal city). Any suggestions? The mighty google has us coming up 15th… in front of CostCo… on a Sunday…Is 18th to Hayes better?
I live in Pentagon City. I avoid 15th Street like the plague. When you come out of the crystal city connector tunnel take a left to the light/crosswalk. Cross there and continue straight on South Hayes Street. You’ll go past the metro station, under a bridge, etc. Keep on South Hayes street till you see a sign for Highlands Park (just pass the fire station) on the left hand side. Cross into that parking lot, hang a left, and keep going straight. The water park should be visible at that point (it’s at the end of the park next to the tennis and basketball courts). Your kid(s) may enjoy visiting the fine folks at the fire station. I see parents bringing their kids to take a look at the engines all the time.

P.S. I haven’t read this forum stream so I am assuming you are looking for the new water park.

ParticipantLooking forward to the ride tomorrow. I’ll be riding “sans kid” but am looking forward to using my “Auntie Meg” skills to get everyone safely around the route.

ParticipantI’ll be there with my kid, one of my parents, and maybe some portables from the new Feed Zone Cook Book, because hey, everyone gets a little snacky, particularly the kiddos (and me). No jokes about me needing ride fuel for a 6 mile flat ride.

ParticipantGreat ride today! My daughter (and I) had a blast both on the ride and at the sprayground. She couldn’t stop talking about the planes, boats, train, and “ocean” (aka the Potomac).
Also , Strava!

ParticipantThat was so much fun! HUGE thanks to everyone who came out. It was great to finally meet you, guy.
Extra special thanks to our photographers/cheering section (Mark, DaveK, Ms. DaveK) and AMAZINGLY HUGE THANKS to our caboose/ride marshall/photographer team: ArlingtonRider & Megabeth.
I can’t wait to see people’s pics and videos. We did get some video — we need to clean it up a bit. (On that note, the camera was turned ~120 degrees. iMovie will rotate it in 90 degree turns — any thoughts on how to get it upright?)

My Mac buddy says that this iMovie plugin will spin video 180 degrees.

The problem is that I need less than 180 and more than 90. (I realize the resulting video won’t be rectangular – or will need to be cropped).

ParticipantI had so much fun riding with ya’ll. A great group of kids (and Parental Units). Was so amazed seeing the group roll by, and keep rolling by, and rolling by…
I’ll post the pics I got (that were not obscured by schmutz on the lens) later tonight. And, I’m going to edit together some of the rolling video which I should have posted in the next several days…
A hat tip to dasgeh for a fantastic route which led to the discovery of a new tunnel for me. That was awesome!

ParticipantAgreed – it was a great ride. Many thanks to dasgeh for organizing and leading the way!
Can’t wait to see some pictures/video whenever they’re available.
Also, DaveK – where were you? I saw Mark B. at Gravelly Pt. but didn’t know you were around too.

My wife and I were out there with Mark and Megan, Mark and I were headed off for some mountain-ish bicycling but Mark stuck around to get some shots of the group. My wife happened to be driving by after picking up someone from the airport so she stopped to say hi.

ParticipantHere is a photo I took just after we left while waiting at a light. I believe it took us three light cycles to get everyone through because the light was so fast.

ParticipantYeah, the timing of the light at Eads was HORRIBLE. It turned yellow when I was a few feet into the intersection.
Hey, ArlCo roads folks, what can be done in that situation?
