ParticipantNext ride: June 16 (Father’s Day).
What do people think about this route: http://goo.gl/maps/sHd1m
Meet at Clarendon Village (where the Apple Store is), ride counter-clockwise on Key Blvd –> Veitch –> Custis –> Lyon Village Park –> Key Blvd and back to Clarendon Village. Those who want to can eat around there.Meet at 11:15am
Thoughts?

ParticipantAnother option: Start at Quincy Park, end at Rocklands, tour around Ashton Heights/Lyon Park

ParticipantMight be in for that one! as long as I can get a decent cup of coffee and a croissant

ParticipantYou had me at “end at Rocklands”

ParticipantSo ending at Rocklands. How about this: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2596444
Meet at Quincy Park. Head to Ashton Heights/Lyon Park. Basically, it’s all routed to use my favorite little hidden trail, which goes from the 50 service road to the Lyon Park, behind Long Branch ES.
The route is 4 miles, so a bit longer than last time. It crosses Fairfax, Wilson, Pershing and Washington at lights, and uses primarily neighborhood streets (and the little trail, which isn’t long). Thoughts?
Also, Rocklands opens at 11am. I think getting there early will be key, so I suggest meeting at 10:30am or 10:45am (which will put us at Rocklands somewhere around 11:15/11:30am). We could probably push the leaving time to 11am and still make it to bbq before noon, but I don’t really want to push it.
Thoughts?

ParticipantLooks good to me. Looks like there’s an easy shortcut to avoid the dip in elevation, which might challenge my younger daughter who is riding her own bike now, and maybe me, since I’ll be pulling our older and heavier one on a trail-a-bike.
Another bonus – this route not only ends at Rocklands, it ends at a playground. For the kids, I mean.

Oh, right – by staying on 1st Rd, right? It’s a steep downhill there, but that’s a good idea to keep in the back pocket for anyone who wants to avoid the dip, and/or if we’re running late and want to cut distance.
And yes, start/finish at playgrounds. I have a toddler, so it’s all by design. I try for flat routes, but man, that’s hard in Arlington.

ParticipantJust putting this up so I can find this when it’s time to plan the July ride (and if anyone wants to comment):
July Ride: Tour de Spraygrounds.
I believe the options are:
Hayes to Lyon Village: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2596510 (hilliest, but on trails)
Hayes to Drew: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2596590
Lyon Village to Drew: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2596604ALL THREE: Drew to Hayes to LV: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2596667
If Va Highlands is open:
Lyon Village to VA Highlands: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2596527
Drew to VA Highlands: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2596502May 30, 2013 at 3:10 pm #971391chris_s
ParticipantFor heading to Drew, 6th & Glebe doesn’t have a stoplight. Suggest Irving down to 7th for crossing Glebe instead.
Both the >> Drew routes really highlight how obnoxious it is to cross Walter Reed Dr down there with this kind of group. Monroe & Walter Reed would be a good candidate for a Hawk signal methinks.
Lyon Village >> Drew I really don’t like that stint on 10th St, or the brief salmoning on Fillmore required to do it. Maybe detour over to Danville to Pershing?
Hopefully Virginia Highlands will be open, the Drew >> VA Highlands ride looks nice.

ParticipantThanks. I’ll definitely scout these before July. Just mapping out to see what I need to scout. These are hugely helpful!
I wonder what the Country Club folks would think about a Kidical Mass ride coming through…

Looks like the hill goes all the way up to 7th. Might solve that by running your route in reverse so its downhill, then taking a shortcut if necessary. But I don’t know if any of this will matter. The hills won’t be too bad.

ParticipantWe’re getting excited about Kidical Mass Arlington’s Father’s Day Ride on Sunday!
10:30am, Quincy Park, ending at Rocklands. Hope to see you all there. I believe Megabeth and Mark have promised a little sprinkler action when we bike past their place.
