ParticipantTook the gravel bike with knobby 32s this morning, but could have ridden road slicks such was the job Arlington did on the Custis. Only exceptions were the connections to the trail, which don’t seem to get plowed. Where I dropped on this morning (11th St.), the junction is so short it doesn’t matter, but connections at Buchanan, Abingdon, Nelson, Monroe, and Lee looked icy.

ParticipantFYI here is the snow plowing map for trails in Arlington that can be found at https://emergency.arlingtonva.us/weather/snow-ice/clearing-snow-on-trails/

Please note that the map does not display cycletracks, but as indicated on the page, they do get treated and plowed. You can view an interactive map here which will help you determine which streets with bike lanes will be plowed: http://gis.arlingtonva.us/gallery/map.html?webmap=292bfb65622f4431b4103b50bf574af1

Interestingly, the map does not show the section in question, from the W&OD/Custis intersection west to EFC and Lee Highway. That section does get plowed, but it’s not indicated on the map.

Yeah, I don’t understand why they left that segment off the map. The GIS viewer at least covers it, though.

ParticipantBike lanes on Lee Hwy heading east through Cherrydale and Lyon Village were completely clear this morning.

Lee was a giant salt lick. So was M Street. I was practically cured by the time I got to the office.

Maybe this makes you well preserved?

ParticipantAny update on the trail condition as of tonight. Particularly between Gallows and Falls Church. Looking to ride from Gallows to D.C. on my road bike tomorrow (25mm tires)? Thank you!

I rode from Vienna Community Center to West St. tonight (6:30-7pm). It was all easily passable on 32s – basically the same conditions as the photo I posted this morning – maybe a little more bare pavement. No significant melting today, so no real ruts. Hit a few small ice patches – had one minor spin out on the climb up to Virginia Lane – but I never had to put a foot down. The transition from Virginia back to the WOD is a bit hairy – take it slow there. There’s not a significant amount of bare pavement when you turn back onto the trail off of Virginia. Same thing after crossing Shreve.
But should be just fine, overall, in the morning.

Great! Thank you for the update.

ParticipantWater main break on Cedar lane near the W&OD is causing a large sheet of ice on the Vienna side of the crossing. At 6:20 today FFC EMT evacuated a cyclist that had fallen on the ice. FFC EMT placed salt on the ice but the water is still flowing.

ParticipantIn Alexandria, road work at the intersection of Beauregard St/King St/Walter Reed Dr is causing huge traffic backups. EB Beauregard becomes one lane (with 2 left turn lanes) as it approaches the intersection. Traffic became a huge clusterf*** this morning at the intersection of Beauregard St/Braddock Rd with big backups on both EB Beauregard and WB Braddock Rd. I hopped onto the sidewalk beforehand to get around the mess.
In Arlington, the aforementioned road work ends about 100 feet after crossing the Beauregard/King/Walter Reed intersection. EB Walter Reed Dr has less traffic, but drivers are going a lot faster presumably to make up time, so be on alert for increased driver aggression (faster driving, quick lane changes, close passes, etc.).

ParticipantMost of the trails in Frankfurt are snow covered. However the cyclepath portions of the most sidewalks have been mostly cleared and gritted (but not the pedestrian portions). On road bike lanes are clear.
