We have a similar discussion in my family in the summer about moving to a cooler climate.

Weather.com says 10 degrees at 7am on Thursday with wind chill of -3. Good times.
Whoa. Where I am from, we would all stay inside and declare a national emergency. And no one would come to help because they would all be inside.
And yet I am strangely fascinated by riding in Thursday and possibly freezing my unmentionables.

ParticipantWe got a little over 2.5 this morning, and our neighborhood was not treated or plowed, and probably won’t be.

This is so awesome. THANK YOU! Think we can get an update at oh say 5pm on trail status?
Looking out my window to the W&OD near Ohio St, it is clear. I mounted the studded tires earlier this morning and am heading out to the library.

ParticipantI almost forgot to report another awesome thing – the Shirlington Road crosswalk buttons, which apparently have been doing nothing for awhile, suddenly lit up very bright yellow flashing lights on *both* sides of the street last night!
Cars on both sides actually stopped to let me cross the full width of the road!
Thank you so much, Dasgeh, and everyone else on our BAC, for following up on my request to bring that need to the county’s attention. And I need to thank Arlington County for fixing this in the exact way that I hoped that they would. It works!

Prince George’s trails were awesome this morning — about 2″ of fresh unpacked powder!
Met Branch trail hadn’t been plowed when I went through about 9am, but it was great riding with light fluffy snow and not packed by footprints. Likewise, the 1st street cycletrack and the PA ave center cycle track were great, just 2″ or so of nice grippy snow.
On the other hand, the streets in NE DC are horrendous. Packed snow/ice combo from the salt treatments. Very treacherous, especially with lots of freaked out drivers. Hopefully we’ll get some sun this afternoon and those roads will melt, but I was just creeping through some of the neighborhood streets because they were so slippery and cars nearby.
Thanks very much for the update. I should’ve subscribed to this forum last year for PG trails updates from you!

ParticipantTrail report from the late commute, after the snow stopped falling (I had an appointment this am, and drove to the hospital — that mile-long drive was a fustercluck. Rode in to work just before lunch, which was, on the whole, lovely):
Neighborhood streets in Cherrydale were unplowed, but “virgin” enough to be rideable. Lee Highway had not been plowed by 10am, but was clear when I went over/by it on the Custis after 11am. I expect they’ll keep it clear the rest of the day.
Trails: Custis from Cherrydale to top of Rosslyn: mostly thin layer of fresh snow – very easy to ride on, no problems on the hills. The S-curve was bare pavement — kudos to ArlCo for paying attention to that tricky stretch. Bridges (over Lee Hwy, over Spout Run, over I-66) had noticeably more snow and will be treacherous if not cleared again this afternoon. On the moguls near the bridge-to-nowhere, there was snow built up in the recess – I worry those will turn icy if not dealt with.
Custis down the Rosslyn hill was pretty bad, mostly because the foot-traffic compacted the snow and started to created some ice. Behind the sound wall Quinn St and Oak St was the worst stretch, and I would expect that only to get worse in the cold temperatures if it’s not cleared to the pavement this afternoon. The street crossings were slushy, I think because the streets hadn’t been plowed yet. I’ll little concerned that plows on the streets will create “walls” that will be hard to get over.
Custis-MVT connector (from IoD to TR Island): The brine on this stretch had left me hopeful that it would be plowed today, but no such luck. The fresh powder was on the deep side, but easy enough to push through. After going down twice last year on the steep downhill before the bridge, I walked that section, though didn’t notice any ice. Trollheim to the TR Bridge was more of the same.
TR Bridge was a grimey, slushy mess. I doubt I’ll ever try it again in the snow, given the small margin of error. That said, it seems car tires sprayed whatever treatment from the road onto the sidepath, and the deep, grimey slush was soft, not icy, and easy enough to push through.DC Side: The start of the Kennedy Center property was a clearly delineated line of clear pavement — they had fastidiously cleared their sidewalks, and the few roads I have to navigate in DC to get to the office were clear, wet pavement.
Issues to flag for ArlCo (I’m also going to email this to trails@arlingtonva.us): First and foremost – great job. ArlCo’s trail clearing team has done an excellent job today, and, from my Facebook feed, seems to be the only public works team getting high marks today. Given what I saw on my late commute (after the snow had stopped), we’re in good shape for the rest of the cold week, except in the following locations:
– the length of the Custis trail along the Rosslyn hill (Lynn Street to the I-66 overpass), especially the section behind the soundwall, and the section on the I-66 overpass
– in the indentations on the Custis trail between the Adams Street connector and the “bridge to nowhere”
– the Spout Run overpass
– the Lee Hwy overpass just after the “S-curve”These locations had enough snow around 11:30am today to make me worry that the snow will melt and create very icy conditions for the rest of this week (given the weather forecast). It seems like it would be much easier to clear these trails today then to figure out how to clear the ice over the rest of the week.

Yeah, but biking in Miami or San Diego sucks, as I understand it.
Finally, I’m definitely planning to take a different route home, and probably for the rest of the week. The most direct is probably Memorial Bridge –> 110 Trail –> around the Iwo Jima (either on road or on the paths) –> Meade –> Arlington Blvd access road –> Rhodes –> 14th St N/15th St N –> Veitch –> Key . I would appreciate any reports on those roads/trails, especially the 110 trail and the paths around Iwo Jima. Thanks!

Before this BikeArlington Forum started up, there wasn’t really a good central source for trail condition updates. One source was the DC Area Trail Status Twitter account, but not many people knew about it. Plus Twitter feeds are very limited when dealing with multiple topics (such as trail reports, stolen bikes, new bike infrastructure projects, complaints about lack of infrastructure, rides, races, other bike events, etc.).
The Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail (not related to the Friends of the Capital Crescent Trail) includes sporadic posts about conditions on the CCT. But if someone is riding on two different trails or areas, they would have to browse to different websites for weather and trail reports.

It is very cool that we have something like the BikeArlington Forum/Washington Area Bike Forum. The forum is one of the important additions to DC-area bike culture, up there with Capital Bikeshare and the protected bikeways (formerly known as cycletracks).

Participant3pm Report:
4MR trail from Mt Vernon Ave to the Weenie Beenie is PRISTINE and glorious.
Arterial roads in Arlington are fine, though sometimes the bike lane is slushy and gross.
Arlington Neighborhood Streets vary widely. Some are fine, others are a sheet of ice.January 6, 2015 at 9:42 pm #1018865slowtriguy
ParticipantI rode the Custis from the Fairfax on-ramp to the W&OD, and then the W&OD out to West Street in Falls Church City around 1500-1530 today. At that time, the Custis and W&OD were just wet until you reach the Sycamore underpass — awesome plowing! After that, the trail had been plowed but still had about 0.5″ of packed snow, with some icy footprints and bumpy spots until Van Buren. Van Buren was packed snow with some ice. The trail from the 19th Street connector to Washington was partially plowed. From Washington to West, someone has been out there with a small plow and scraped it down to about 0.5″ of packed snow, with a few clear spots and one or two icy bits.
I rode the whole way on semi-slick 26″-ers with lowered pressure.
Be on the lookout for ice later tonight and tomorrow AM, though.

I subscribe to that Twitter account. I see that it hasn’t been updated in quite a long time. I don’t see a lot of specific updates about Northeast/Northwest Branch Trails and the MBT, so I’m grateful to greenbelt for his updates.

Do you mean the TR Bridge (I-66; Kennedy Center to TR Island) or the Key Bridge (becomes Fort Myer Drive; Georgetown to Rosslyn)?

ParticipantAccording to reports via folks on Twitter, the CCT (Cap Crescent Trail) is unplowed on the DC side and plowed on the MoCo side.
This, of course, is a reversal of last year when the NPS was good about doing their part and MoCo didn’t do anything. Btw, this is our first example of the new MoCo CCT plow policy we fought for last spring. So yippie!
I’m bailing and taking my bike home on metro. A frozen rutted half section of CCT along with about 10 miles of county road shoulders in the dark is just too much for me to risk (and take after this morning’s 3-hr adventure).
Caution over valour.
