ParticipantAs of 2 hours ago, the bike lane on Fairfax Drive-Clarendon/Wilson Blvd between Virginia Square and Rosslyn is almost unusable. I would recommend taking the traffic lane.
Custis had a layer of snow that was starting to freeze. Not looking good if you need to access the MVT from it in Rosslyn.
All side streets that weren’t plowed are likely to be slick in the morning as the snow has already melted slightly then started to freeze. Be extra careful Tuesday morning.

ParticipantAs of 6:00 am, the WOD is super clear from the Custis intersection to at least Sycamore, and the Custis looked cleared. The WOD east of the Custis intersection is not cleared, with about an inch of snow over some crunchy stuff. So far it is not too bumpy but wide tires or studs advised.

ParticipantRoads in Crystal City and the District were clear and moist (very little standing water)
MVT from the CC Connector to the 14th Street Bridge had about a half inch of snow. I have studded 35s and had no traction problems.
Many others had gone before me. This was MVT at the MM15 post about 1/3 mile upriver from the Gravelly Point portapotties (perma-potties?).

ParticipantSide streets in FFX were dicey, riding car tracks in packed snow sucks. The main roads like Rte 123 were clear and just wet, most of the shoulder was clear. The WOD west of East Falls Church was about 1″-2″ fresh snow, loved that part. Trails from EFC to Rosslyn were clear and just wet, Key Bridge was patches of packed snow / ice.

Sounds like Arlington is keeping up the exemplary work!

ParticipantCapitol Crescent Trail looked like all slush, so the roads it was.

They are, and it was a real pleasure.

Make sure to tell the County Board. There has been grumbling from some circles of the county about the expense. The board needs to hear that it is appreciated.

Yep, they were brushing the W&OD at about 9:15 this morning and made sure to clear the Ohio St access trail as well. I’m about to head out for a ride to at least Herndon.

ParticipantEast of Custis until the end (beginning?) of the WOD is packed snow with a crunchy, nougaty layer underneath. Okay, just crunchy. 4MR is clear. MVT is not. Just use studs or MB tires and you’ll be good!
As usual, Van Buren connector is nothing but snow, but is also extra fun!

ParticipantTrails from Van Buren in FC to Rosslyn was so well groomed! Better than the streets around my ‘hood. I’m guessing they’re working their way further up the W&OD too?

Thank you so much for continuing to clear snow from parts of the Washington & Old Dominion, Custis, and Four Mile Run multi-use trails. As a bike-to-work commuter, it is a much safer route to DC than having to ride side by side with traffic on Lee Highway.
While I am a Fairfax resident, I can tell you that when there are clear trails, I am more likely to stop in Arlington during my commute for a quick bite to eat or to do light grocery shopping. Thanks again,
Chris Shue

ParticipantLate morning update:
1. Custis from Quincy to IoD is perfectly perfect. Very clear with a bit of melt now, so be careful this evening, but nothing at all of concern. A+ for Arlington Co.
2. Bridge over Spout Run from IoD to MVT/Roosevelt Island is clear, except for slush on the hairpin. Fine during the day, be careful this evening.
3. MVT – not clear. All crunch snow/slush. Fine on slicks (I don’t have studded tires) but I would be concerned about this evening’s commute home if temperatures fall.
4. Trollheim. Beautiful snow, easy to ride today, but will get ugly tonight. Careful!
5. 14th Street Bridge – slushy but about 50% clear. Should be rideable this evening.January 27, 2015 at 4:51 pm #1021458Phatboing
ParticipantThe W&OD between EFC and Tysons is as expected – about an inch of snow, and the ruts have already begun to form. A motor vehicle’s gone over some sections, so there’s a reasonably nice track to follow those bits, but when the melty-refreezy happens later today, things are likely going to get annoying.
WE’RE ALL GOING TO BE SLIGHTLY INCONVENIENCED!!
