I thought the Friday evening commute was more fun than this morning, but this morning was easier as there was no snow/sleet cover. I saw a grand total of 4 other cyclists between Reston and Crystal City.

Quick scouting report – W&OD Shreve to Custis intersection and back, 0800-0825

Snow was coming down steadily and sticking on Citizens Bridge and the bridge at Little Falls. It was just beginning to stick lightly in spots between Great Falls and Little Falls and atop the Brandymore Castle hill. Smooth, wet sailing overall.

I saw a total of one other rider the whole time.

My legs wimped out, so I left the Gatorskins on. There was a small bit of slush on the Custis along Fairfax Dr and near St. Ann’s. But otherwise it was just wet and the icy snow coming down wasn’t sticking between 7:30 and 8:30.

In other news, I was number 43 past the monolith and I still need better rain pants.

On the late shift, partcipitation had stopped (score!) and the roads and trails were just wet. I was only #67 at the monolith. NOTE: my phone thinks the temp will drop during the day, so I’m planning on heading home early to “telecommute” this afternoon.

Wooden bridges on the WOD between Carlin Springs and Columbia Pike are slushed up, but that’s about it. Even the trail beside the pond along that stretch, which is oddly ten degrees colder than anywhere else, hadn’t started freezing at 8am this morning.

A steady stream of ice pellets to the face isn’t particularly fun.

Citizens Bridge is sliiiiiiiick. If you ride a steady, straight line, it’s passable on slicks, but don’t make any sudden moves. Definitely the worst part of the trail between ArlCo and Gallows, as everything else is just wet as of 2pm.

**14th St bridge to Central Arlington @ 3:30 mostly good**

Sleet coming down, but sidewalks, trails, and pavement all just wet. The only trouble spot on my route was the wooden bridge from the Pentagon Marina over to Pentagon north parking, which had a crunchy 1/2″ of sleet/slush/ice. I stayed moving, but slowed WAY down. I assume all the wooden bridges along MVT are similarly slick.

No problems at all on Jefferson Memorial sidewalks, 14St bridge, MVT (near and over humpback), path along RT27 NNW of the pentagon, AF monument hill or neighborhood streets in Arlington Heights/Alcova.

About an hour ago, Foggy Bottom streets, TR Bridge, MVT Connector, Custis are all totally clear, just wet. The trollheim (wooden bridge on the mvt) had a coating of white, but it wasn’t slick. I would still recommend slowing way down, since it can only get worse from here…

I left D.C. around 3pm and it was fine but quickly got more white on the CCT as you went up in elevation. I’m glad I left when I did b/c it was getting colder and seemed like it could quickly get rough if the snow starts coming down. No fun in the dark. I hate the dark.

I flintstoned the trollheim cuz I was skeered. The Custis westbound had some frost near the moguls and by the Fairfax Connector. Brandymore was frosted over but rideable with caution. Everything else I rode, including all the streets, was clear 5:15-6:30.

14th St Bridge, MVT, 4MRT, WOD clear DC to Westover. Wooden bridges have 1/2 inch of snow as of 6pm.

Ditto as of 10 minutes ago, just a bit more snow. Smooth sailing on the MVT, 4MR and WOD. Bridges were fine if you keep your line.

Snow was beginning to collect on the WOD in all the usual places between Gallows and Reston as I rode through from approx 5:45-6:30. The temperature has dropped several degrees since then so I suppose it is all lightly snow-covered now (if my street and sidewalk are any indication).
