I took my fixie down the W&OD heading west from my house in Falls Church, and almost bought it just before the Shreve Rd crossing. I didn’t see one of the remaining ice ridges on the trail, and my slick 25s went haywire, front end going to one side, back end going to the other. It was an interesting experience on a fixie, too, as I could feel the back wheel lose and regain its traction. Anyway, bailed out at Virginia Ln, and took the roads instead, and was just fine. I had ridden the trail home on the same bike last night in the dark, and had no trouble avoiding icy bits, but today’s dusting of snow was just enough to obscure visibility. Unless I hear reports that the snow is back off the trail, I’ll be taking the road home.
That’s why I didn’t ride today. Going home last night I could see lots of places where thin sheets of ice were beginning to form, especially between Columbia Pike and the top of Virginia Lane on the WOD. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to see that ice this morning and would bite it riding slicks. I’m glad you made it out of your situation ok.

ParticipantI just rode from WOD mile 8 at Virginia Lane in Falls Church to the Custis Trail to the Roosevelt Bridge into downtown DC on a roadie with 23cm slicks and the trail was perfectly fine.

Thin sheets weren’t my problem, thankfully, though I didn’t stay on long enough to find any. I’m still concerned about lingering ruts of ice, though if they’re visible, (i.e. not snow-covered) I can avoid them.

ParticipantI was surprised at how dry everything was, even in spots like Banneker Park that have been troublesome the last couple of days. I think I can finally go fenderless tomorrow!

ParticipantJust was on the W&OD. There is black ice on the trail in many spots west of Dunn Loring.

Same was true in the Reston area about 90 minutes ago.

My ride back from Vienna to Falls Church was much better than my ride out this morning. Same icy bits, but sans dusting of snow, I could see them now. I had to ride cautiously, but it was still pretty fast.

ParticipantJust to confirm: Custis, MVT Connector, TR Parking lot, TR Bridge are 100% clear to pavement (except for the sides, but those are easily avoidable). Would be no problem on slicks. Hooray!

you must have been directly in front of, or behind me this morning because that is exactly what I was marveling at around 7:20am.

ParticipantJust saw Arlco spraying Brine on the Custis. “We’re all going to die.”

Nope. Not I. I’ve got an early AM flight to sunny Californ-eye-ay. 65 degrees every day as far as the eye can see on the forecast. Just hope it all melts before my return next week.
BTW, Sorry Team 9’ers. I will likely have limited to no access to a bike while out there, so I shan’t be contributing points again until next Wednesday…

Why don’t the places in this country with the best weather make it easier to bike? Ugh!
