ParticipantThat’s the way someone described Hanoi traffic, but it doesn’t look busy enough and not enough motorcycles and scooters.

ParticipantHmm, do I spoil it?
…it’s a fake. It’s an interesting GIF, though, but you can tell that the cars/people have been duplicated (does everyone travel in packs of 4 identical cars?).

Yes, Hanoi has a lot more scooters carrying families of four, large appliances and other things with traffic lights and signs only a suggestions, yet it seems to mostly work.

ParticipantMaybe I first saw this video at this forum, but so what. Worth a revisit. Ethiopia’s largest intersection:

ParticipantActually, this video was produced to demonstrate how the improvements at the Intersection of Doom will work.

I’m dreaming of the day 5 Points and Clarendon Circle are turned into similar…

ParticipantThere is a recent review by a cyclist minded individual of the intersection (can’t find it now). His review as a cyclist is rather less “good”. The biggest complaint seems to be that there isn’t enough room/a dedicated lane for cyclists to filter in the slow moving queue towards the intersection. I’m not sure why you couldn’t just use the now huge sidewalks and then enter back into vehicle traffic once in the shared space.
He also talks about how it is very difficult to “take” a position once in the circle but I find that a halfhearted criticism when the traffic is moving at a very very reasonable speed. But certainly something to consider about the flow and encouraging other modes of transportation.
In British fashion the review is him on a Brompton.

Curiosity killed the cat and I wanted to have a little fun, so I made a mock-up of what the Poyntonification of Clarendon Circle would look like based on a diagram of the Poynton traffic set-up:
Before Poyntonification:

Note: for this, I made all roads 1 lane. Also, the parking lot east of Silver Diner (at 6 o’clock on the big circle) would preferably have shopping/dining to fill out the area. Even though there are plans for Clarendon Circle (dead-ending of Irving St next to Silver Diner with a bike queue area near it are part of the plan), who knows, what if they did this?

ParticipantSeven Corners and Arlington Memorial Circle could use a similar makeover. NPS is looking to improve the safety of Memorial Circle (at Memorial Bridge). Maybe the double roundabout idea might not work there, but it could give the planners different ideas about how to fix that dangerous area. Then there’s the Intersection of Doom. Could these ideas help to transform that problem area too?
The plans for Water Street at the Southwest Waterfront (The Wharf) include a shared space design, where pedestrians, bikes and cars will mix in a common zone. It’ll be a few years before that’s completed, so we don’t know how well it will work just yet. Maybe these designs work better when there are also bike trails/lanes nearby (but not in the middle of the mixing zone/shared space)?

Has anyone else here spent much time riding and driving in the UK? Roundabouts are SO MUCH BETTER.
bobco85 — you rock! Thanks.
BTW you don’t need more than one lane because roundabouts reduce the almighty “seconds delay at intersection” which is what drives road-widening to begin with.
