Hey, by all means keep it on full burn when riding on open road with vehicular traffic around you. There’s a stretch on the WOD that’s pretty dark (between Gallows Rd and Church St.) that I keep my light on full blast plus I keep it high for Deer but this one evening some jogger just popped out of nowhere and he said, shadowing his eye balls from my light, “That’s ridiculous”. I said “Put a reflective vest on you clown”. So in some situations it is necessary to keep it high. Common sense of course comes into play.
This, word for word. If there’s no lighting other than what’s there with me, I still need to be able to see the surface in front of me at 15-20mph. That means a high-zoot light. I don’t ride through deer country… I might mount a couple of those deer whistles on my helmet if I did. Wonder if they really help…

Define “deer country.” I’ve encountered them, in the afternoon, on the Custis Trail. The only deer I’ve encountered in the morning was on Columbia Pike.

ParticipantYup: Custis Trail = deer, racoons, squirrels, red foxes, dogs, cats, rats, homo sapiens….

ParticipantIt was Deer country just before 2012 because it was breeding season according to WTOP.

ParticipantWe can’t stop here… this is deer country.

ParticipantOh it has a 1200 lumen flash mode for on the road. You can see it reflecting off street signs 4 blocks away in daylight
When there is a ninja, I don’t kick it down to low beam. Sorry I’m blinding you, but you’re invisible otherwise. Get a light and I promise I will stop shining this in your face.

ParticipantI have an 800 lumen amber light on my recumbent trike. I’m ordering a Brompton soon and I hope to be able to use the light in the District. It’s a bit of a monster size-wize but it gets attention even in low-power mode. Maybe too much attention.

ParticipantA rider got me with a wicked strobe on the WO&D this morning 30 minutes after dawn… I thought that strobe season was finally over… guess not.
I. HATE. STROBES. Do what you will when on the road with cars (I’m all for visibility) but there is zero call for a 1000 ln strobe on the trails.

ParticipantUgh. I always set my lights to constant on the trail. Blinkies and strobes suck to stare at.

ParticipantNo strobes on trails!

When you can clearly see the finger I’m giving you for blinding me.

Thing is, I (generally) manage pretty well even with the insane 1800 ln lights by just looking away- a strobe always seems to “find” my retina and sear into my (otherwise benevolent) soul causing much rage.
