Seems like every time I ride back to my car these days after 6pm, somebody has a super bright LED light that’s either pointed up too high or the Lumens is just up there. My light only puts out 295 lumens and I think that sucker’s bright enough. “See and be seen” is what’s important to me but where is the line drawn? Is 1500 lumens too much?

I wouldn’t bother with the amber headlight on trails as there’s absolutely no need for it. I experienced that on the BWI trail one afternoon… I’m not sure why the guy had his light going full blast but he did. I’d also be hard pressed to turn it on strobe in the city as well… too annoying. A few weeks ago I went on a 42 mile ride through St. Mary’s County and spent about 15-20 miles riding the shoulder on MD-5. Good lighting is a plus in that situation.

I’m a fan of strobes for daylight-only city biking (where a) everyone’s pupils are already tiny and b) you don’t cause people to lose their night vision). The problem can be that the stroke always blinks at the highest lumen level. Some recent light have a set of alternate “walking mode” settings (requires you to hold the button for a while when turning on the light) one of which is a lower-power strobe for walker’s night use, which, might be acceptable for night-time city biking. Maybe.

Most of the time, I use my front headlight in lowest-power mode. Saves on battery and the current tech is usually 100-200 lumens or so on low.

I am the jerk who uses one of these on the rear of my bikes, mostly because I can set the LEDs to circle in a 360 degree sweep at night: http://www.amazon.com/Aervoe-1185-LED-Road-Flare/dp/B003GAXXUU
