Greenbrier River Trail

Komorebi and I biked the Greenbrier River Trail last month. It’s a Rails To Trails Hall of Fame trail and with good reason.

We missed peek leaf peeping season by a week or two but the trail still had pretty leaf cover.

The trail is mostly hard packed gravel and has several openings with views of the river. It was quiet and I loved the sound of the river below and leaves crunching.

There were several trestles.

And two tunnels!

The north end of the trail is in Cass, WV which was once a lumber town. Now a State Park, the company housing in town can be rented.

Cass has a scenic railroad tour powered by a steam locomotive.

Some guy showed up in the General Lee.

On the way back from Cass, a deer ran in front of us for several hundred yards and then decided to stop to say hello.

Did you do the complete trail? I’ve done the lower half in two segments. :p

We stayed in Marlinton, WV for the night. The Humane Societysells bags of corn at the hotel to feed to the ducks. There were about 150 very vocal ducks hanging around.

The river valley had a beautiful fog the next morning.

Not everyone is as good a lumberjack as I am.

The sun eventually came out.

Yes. We parked at Caldwell and then biked the full trail to Cass and then rode back to Marlinton for the night. Then we biked from Marlinton back to Caldwell the next morning. It was a little over 100 miles the first day and then about 50 the second day. It was a lot of gravel riding for two days. M

If I were to do it again, I would prefer to do it as a three day trip. I would start in Caldwell and leisurely bike to Marlinton. Then I’d bike to Cass the next day and take a ride on the scenic railroad before biking back to Marlinton. On the third day I’d bike back to Caldwell.

There are multiple benches and campgrounds along the trail that are perfect for just sitting and enjoying the view.

It was incredibly quiet, something that I miss dearly.

The full trail is 77 miles with very few intersecting roads. I don’t think we saw a moving car the entire time except in Marlinton and Cass.

We thankfully didn’t run into the mower. I like the other video you have going through the tunnel.
