#FSwormhole – The Virginia Park/Flowers Addition Wormhole

This wormhole is located between 5th St. South and South Garfield St. in Arlington, VA. So named because those were the original names of the parcels on the 1940 Arlington map (which I’ve also included). Today this neighborhood is called Arlington Heights. This paved path isn’t very long, but it is a nice mini-shortcut when trying to get from Fillmore St. to the neighborhood interior.

Is this in Arlington? The map is so light I can’t really tell what the streets are.

On my way to retrieve the Calvinball, I opted to take a visit to the original wormhole that inspired Beach Filipe to institute this game.

It’s the portage connection between Chain Bridge and the CCT. Since it was night, these photos are not so good.

The top of the wormhole is at the second wooden fence after you pass mile post 7 on the CCT (heading towards Georgetown)

There’s a single-track pathway down the side of the hill through the woods. Unless you are Ricky D, you will need to either roll or carry your bike:

Almost down!

New wormhole for me tonight. From W&OD west of Vienna to Meadow Knoll Ct (Google Map)
A raised wooden walkway….rather long.
I’ll call it “Riding over a” Meadow Knoll.

A little grass then someone’s driveway at the end and you pop out on Meadow Knoll and can get out to Lawyers Rd (not that you normally want to….hence I’ve never done this until tonight).

A view from the plank

At the bottom, dash across Canal Road (or I think it’s called Clara Barton Parkway at this point) and lift your bike over the low railing:

Seems good to call this “The OG Wormhole”, but I’m open to other ideas (“Unchain me!”)

Ta-da!

This wormhole can also be done in reverse. But instead of lifting your bike over the railing, ride to the end , do a quick U-turn onto the Parkway and look for an opening to get to the bottom of the path. It’s easy when there is no traffic, but can be tricky when traffic is busy.

Wormhole #1 – How did the chicken cross Muddy Branch

Not sure if this counts as a wormhole but there is an underpass on Muddy Branch road. It’s part of the Muddy Branch trail but if you aren’t familiar with it isn’t easily visible from the road. It’s a nice way to cross Muddy Branch and it also leads to a shortcut to cut across to Great Seneca either with the trail or on the parallel road.7cae0556ebbd2eef1992d58fd6899200.jpg

Unfortunately this wormhole isn’t applicable to most of you (it’s in Philadelphia), but I thought it was pretty cool. I also didn’t document it photographically, so I’ve done my best with Google Streetview.

Looking at the path from the sidewalk on Ridge Ave

Context: you’re heading south on Ridge Ave, which is convenient but you’re getting buzzed by a lot of cars and you want to get down to the Schuylkill River Trail (MUP alongside the river). You hop up on the curb, then notice a narrow path between a cemetery and a wall. Take it until ends, climb down a ~2 foot drop, then hug the narrow strip of grass alongside West Hunting Park Ave until it gets too narrow as it goes under a cemetery road bridge. Hop into the road, take the lane and then cross Kelly Drive at the light to access the SRT.

Not that one needs to praise SteveO due to his lack of Ego juice. BUT that is the Original WormHole from the OG of WormHoles. WELL PLAYED. 3Points

That is a Level 4 WormHole: Saves time (or adds time due to your lack of upperbody strength), can be dangerous but for sure it is fun to explore, connects communities in a different way. It adds variety to your CCT travel experience.

Ride on.

It looks like an actual worm wormed the hole. I like it. Where exactly is that? Can you give us Google/Strava map pic?

I hereby claim the multidimensional R2D2 wormhole, formerly dubbed as “Fire Hydrant but Not Arms – FHBNA” (zoom in on the green trash can [emoji1005] with sign for the name inspiration).
8333c2fe76638d120307a78172f6e538.jpg

The non-descript, high curb entry off of South Oak Street in Falls Church VA is identifiable by the fire hydrant, the green R2D2 trash can with the “no fire arms” sign, and the “long fence” sign on the chain link fence around TJ Elementary School.ea7f1970f647e838205068bdc49792f3.jpg

The East exit through Cavalier Trail Park comes out on S Maple Ave and leads me to 2 local bike shops, FC Distillery, Audacious Aleworks, Target, 2 coffee ☕️ shops or the only bowling alley around town!

The North exit is through Howard E Herman Park and used to lead me to the only brewery in town, Mad Fox (R.I.P.) on Leesburg Pike (Rt 7) or the old Post Office (now a Harris Teeters).

All entrances/exits can reversed to go E, W, N or S (but the later T-bones at the Elementary School, forcing an E or W decision)

I like this wormhole as it allows me to cris-cross Falls Church (west to east or vice versa) w/out having to deal with the hazards of Leesburg Pike, especially if you wan to stay south of that congested artery, and the 3 footbridges that cross over Tripps Run, which bisects the little City of Falls Church.

Ash Grove Wormhole Complex
Southwest of Tysons, the Ash Grove Wormhole Complex connects the Vienna/Wolf Trap area to Tysons through neighborhoods and avoids the narrow, high-traffic climb up Old Courthouse Rd. It is part of an official signed bike route between Wolf Trap Park for the Performing Arts and the Spring Hill Metro Station (via Bois Ave. and Montmorency Dr.).

A strong wormhole that I use as a shortcut to get to Wolf Trap by following the Dulles Access sound wall and thereby avoid motorized traffic congestion on all other routes to/fro that popular music [emoji445] venue (oh how I miss those days …)

You can also reach the original homestead of Lord Fairfax, from whence all property rights flow over the 5 million acres that now constitute Fairfax County, for any history buffs or property owners in that jurisdiction that might read this!:-0

It also leads to Walmart on a bike w/ out becoming Road kill on Rt 7!!
