Nice to start seeing enough melting to be able to use wormholes again. I used Cathy Miller’s Kutner park wormhole today and also found one myself.

This wormhole in Fairfax allows cyclists to escape to another neighborhood and avoid having to go on Main Street.

Based on the neighborhood, I am calling this “Wormhole Rustfield”

Introducing the “Tweeny”
Wormhole 78000960a90bef5413ffaa446152fb54.jpg

I use to ride a bike through this wormhole some 50 years ago to my home town “Hillside Ave” Jr High School in Cranford NJ. I entered it as a child, and came out a teenager. I experienced many “firsts” coming of age inside this wormhole, including my first encounter with quantum foam (but I swear that I didn’t inhale;-) More importantly, we hid inside this wormhole during school hours whenever “cutting classes” because the school Principal couldn’t see us there from his office window. This would force him to come outside the building and we would always see him coming first! Then we would exit the far side of the wormhole, scamper up the railway embankment, hop over the train tracks above (which was sorta like another aerial wormhole), and sneak back into school via the side entrance through the parking lot (where parked cars offered good cover) before the Principal returned to his office. Once back inside , we would then act like we were in the bathroom the whole time [emoji849]! This tactic was also deployed to provide a distraction for other non-sanctioned activities inside the perimeter, which often led to a time warping phenomenon known as “detention”.
There were also various initiation rites of one sort or another in this wormhole, as all the kids from the “other” side of town had to traverse it twice a day. It’s a small wonder that I ever survived coming of age in this wormhole.

School Street Wormhole

In the neighborhood near George Mason University streets were reconfigured to prevent cut-through traffic in a neighborhood. It one area that is blocked off to cars there is now a park, School Street Park. They built a pathway connecting George Mason Road to University Road through this new park. It is very handy for making an east west trek through the neighborhoods near GMU. Going through these neighborhoods help you avoid the very busy Main Street in Fairfax City and Braddock Road.

This is a delightful little circle that has several choices one can make in order to avoid the short stretch of panic pedaling on Sunrise Valley Dr from Reston Parkway to Colts Neck bikelanes. We discovered it today because there was so much snow piled up in what would normally be a right lane. (Even when the lane is clear of snow drivers are very aggressive through here).

Found this one by accident today. Allows one to continue from one part of Wolftrap Rd to the next without being harassed by Tysons area traffic. I’m calling it “Wolftrap”.

[Note: No wolves or other creatures were harmed in the documenting of this wormhole. Any morphing by users into a more lupine form is purely a coincidence and wormhole identifier is not responsible. Use of this wormhole during a full moon is at the user’s risk.]

Kirk’s Canal

So you are lazing down the mount vernon trail and remember you needed a hot dog special at Costco. Over the parkway, down Alexandria Road, left on Paul Springs, left on Bainbridge, right on Colonial woods to Kirk Park thru the park and make your way to Costco Route 1 for that delicious kosher dog.

#FSWormhole – It’s Temporary

This allows one to avoid the intersection of Temporary Road (which has been temporary since the 70’s) and North Shore. The recent addition of bike lanes has helped with the intersection, but this alternative is car free.

Melville/ Middle Ridge Wormhole

This wormhole allows you to use a quieter road (Melville Road) instead of the Fair Lakes Parkway and then cross over to another quiet road (Red Admiral Way to Federal Systems Park Drive) and bypass more of Fair Lakes Parkway. This does not show up as a trail on Google Maps but there is a dirt trail that goes between the two roads.

Lovely wormhole that allows the paved path to wind through the neighborhoods and connect with Lake Anne, our historical village center. I like this one because it’s classy – so I called it CoBri (covered bridge).

Soggy wormhole today – but all paved. This allows one to cut over from the often busy Herndon Parkway to neighborhood streets where you can work your way back to the Green Lizard and other places that serve adult beverages. The street it connects to is Madison, thus — Wormhole Madison.

In Herndon

This wormhole is a half-mile long set of tunnels and bridges that carry you smoothly over the Dulles Toll Road. Access this wormhole from the sidewalk on the westbound side of Route 7 at Tyco Road (near Spring Hill Metro Station), pass the last of the car dealerships and ascend the first bridge. This winds around and eventually drops you out … on the muddy shoulder of Route 7 about half a mile short of the Lewinsville Road intersection. This fine bike infrastructure is worth the trip. But for those of you sporting fenders, beware of any vines extending out into the path which may grab your fender and cause an unplanned stop (as happened to me). Thanks to rcannon for showing me this one.

When the Rt. 7 transformation is finished, these will finally connect. In the meantime, the lack of maintenance is causing them to quickly deteriorate. They are fun to explore and dream about “someday”. Right now they’re less wormholes than unfinished symphonies.

I finally took a road less traveled today that I had noticed off the W&OD but never had reason to explore. And what a find! It’s a badly paved wormhole with narrow path and high fences that dumps you out onto Fellini Ct in Vienna. From there you can get over to the Vienna Metro. I didn’t see any films being made, but there was a Little Free Library. :-)

This was a true wormhole, connecting two parks and two neighborhoods. I’m not sure if this is Falls Church or Annandale – but we were on the way from FC to Annandale so … at any rate, this one is from Slade Run Drive to Rose Lane. If you enter from the north, the park sign says Holmes Run II, so I named this one HRII

Perhaps others have noticed this connection before, but I never have.
When traveling southbound on the Mount Vernon Trail, one must go around the old power plant. North of the plant, the trail splits: go right and it takes you to Slater’s Lane; go left and it takes you down along the river. If you take the river route, you come to Tide Lock Park. The trail curves right and then left, and in a long block you are at First Street, where the two branches reconnect.
If you go right up to Slater’s Lane, then you have to salmon on the sidewalk for a block to connect to the trail, which travels diagonally alongside the tracks until it eventually also reaches First St.

There is a wormhole connection, though, back at the northwest corner of the park, as shown here:
Since it connects Tide Lock Park with Fairfax Drive, I’ll call it the Fair Tides wormhole

It’s partially unpaved, goes through an imposing open gate and requires crossing two sets of train tracks which aren’t quite flush with the ground. But if you opt for the river route, you can take this to get to some of the northernmost parts of Old Town without having to backtrack and without having to salmon on E. Abingdon.

River route. The park is to the left and the wormhole is directly ahead
