Appearing live onstage….the Earworm Wormhole! < [emoji1319][emoji1319][emoji1319]>

A short but highly useful wormhole leads you to/from the Birchmere where lots of great live music has been and will be heard again[emoji1317]

The cool thing is this wormhole gets you into and out of the Birchmere parking lot avoiding their notorious traffic exiting a show, a treacherous part of Mt Vernon Ave and pops you right onto the Four Mile Run trail. Imagine going back in time through the wormhole to hear the music of legendary greats?

Unfortunately this wormhole isn’t applicable to most of you (it’s in Philadelphia), but I thought it was pretty cool. I also didn’t document it photographically, so I’ve done my best with Google Streetview.

Looking at the path from the sidewalk on Ridge Ave

Context: you’re heading south on Ridge Ave, which is convenient but you’re getting buzzed by a lot of cars and you want to get down to the Schuylkill River Trail (MUP alongside the river). You hop up on the curb, then notice a narrow path between a cemetery and a wall. Take it until ends, climb down a ~2 foot drop, then hug the narrow strip of grass alongside West Hunting Park Ave until it gets too narrow as it goes under a cemetery road bridge. Hop into the road, take the lane and then cross Kelly Drive at the light to access the SRT.

    Streets of Philadelphia wormhole.

Thanks to the keen eye of our sponsor, a very special wormhole has be identified. It’s a bike path that uses a tunnel so that a major highway, The R0, goes from an impassable barrier to nothing more than a line on a map when you’re on two wheels. It beautifully decorated with some classic Eurotrash Street Art.

The Wormhole is in Zaventem, Flemish Brabant….that’s Belgium for this not familiar with old world place names. It shall forever be known as the Zaventem R0 Wormhole.

So today’s ride, really a Tour, as they say in Germany, was full of wormholes. In fact, our illustrious prize sponsor claims the ride was all wormhole. This is not true, but it had many. I’ve selected the 3 best ones, one because it really was vital to making this ride happen, and 2 because they were the whole point of this ride! To view the ride https://www.Strava.com/activities/4739724918

The first wormhole was in Hoboken, not the one in New Jersey. It made crossing a railroad grade safe and effortless by passing under it and connecting the route to the path that would take me to the second wormhole (more below). I’ve dubbed it the Hoboken Rail ondetdoorganag.

Number two was just a few more kms later. It is one of several tunnels in Antwerp (the larger metro area) that permits foot traffic and nicked to cross the Scheldt river without much fuss and completely separate from cars. It is named by the municipality as the Fietsertunnel Rechteroever. 2 is pics, the entrance and the tunnel itself:

And, because of upload limits…this is 1/3 and 2/3 of the wormholes from today…

Now for the last wormhole (3/3)

Last, but also quite famous if you’ve ever been to Antwerp (and especially ridden a bicycle there) is the Sint Annatunnel. Opened in 1933, the escalators are original. 574m long, and 31.57m underground, it is a marvelous thing to behold. 3 photos: the western entrance building, a shot of the escalator, and the tunnel itself.

A wormhole from Chain Bridge to the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT). Use this wormhole if you want to avoid riding on C&O Canal Trail. To do that you will have to cross Canal Road NW.

I discovered an East Portal, that leads to the parking lot next to the Coca Cola distribution warehouse, and Dawes Ave, while instilling knowledge to reji HokieBeth & Lynn Salvo while in Wormhole of Knowledge earlier today

    9/11 Pentagon Memorial Wormhole

This wormhole goes from the parking lot of the Pentagon (near the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial) under I-395 and exits at the parking lot on Army Navy Drive across from the Fashion Center at Pentagon City. It’s nice to use if you are coming from the MVT, and want to take a detour through the Pentagon over to that section of town. The 9/11 Memorial is across the parking lot from it on the Pentagon side (follow the signs).

This is the map that shows where it is.

These are the entrances from both sides. First one is the Pentagon side, second one is the Army Navy Drive side.

It’s a very long tunnel (there’s lots of lanes of 395), so here is an interior photo.

Note that signs require one to walk one’s bike. If one were to comply, it might be faster to ride under 395 at Fern Street even though it’s a longer distance.
OTOH…. (not that I would know)

(That said, this tunnel can get busy with pedestrians at certain times, during which one should walk one’s bike not just because it’s the rules, but because it is courteous.)

Well of course you should comply! I always do when I have my BIKE :D, BUT… I have a trike – too hard walk it, plus, I can go as slow as peds on it. Sooo, while on the trike, I’ll take advantage of that small loophole.

Wormhole from Wisconsin to Mass. I had spotted this while running but was deterred by the no biking sign. Josh’s post suggested that it is a merely a suggestion so I went back to try it. [emoji57] From the Trader Joe’s on Wisconsin you can either pop out at the Naval Observatory or by the Danish Embassy on Whitehaven. Probably better to go westbound as Josh suggested so you don’t have to climb the stairs going eastbound!

I think the western part that I’ve been on is slightly different (goes a little further north), and doesn’t have stairs (but instead roots) to worry about. It also avoids the signed parts of the path, and I don’t think you see any “no bikes” signs if you go that way.

    A wormhole loophole!
