Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 40 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because it is all made in Shirlington.
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

Let me know if you have any questions and HAVE FUN!

Does your own home brew at home after a ride count? I took a 15 mile detour between the couch and the fridge.

The executive committee, with input from the video review official, has determined that counting your own homebrew would be contrary to the spirit and point of the side bet, so it does not count. Plus, there would be the issue of whether the review would be objective.

Wait…too much beer? Is that an actual possibility?

That much beer gets kinda expensive, for starters, but I think last year’s Atlas/Bardo/DC Brau trifecta was a bit much for me just on principle. Surprisingly, much as I like beer, I really don’t drink that much of it (well, outside of bike shops).

There were a couple of trips where Rockford and I left more behind in our glasses than we actually drank. It was worth it for the competition, but—on principle—pretty disappointing. This is why I will play this year (when I get around to it), but definitely not compete. Besides not only is it someone else’s turn to win, but it’s pretty clear jwetzel has an eye on the prize already.

Couldn’t sleep so I put the time to good use and put together a map of breweries/brewpubs that seem to be within a day trip. Many of them were already listed for me on http://www.bikeablebrews.com/ There are a lot of them, and I’m pretty sure I missed some. Happy drinking!

Awesome job on that! By the way, New District Brewing Co. just posted that they are officially opening this Saturday, Jan. 9 at noon. Details will follow on their FB page.

You left off пивна дума (Pivna Duma) which is less than a kilometer from my house, so round trip distance counts, but would be a “sleaze” ride. Has great pig’s knuckle to share and four beers supposedly brewed on location. Of course the day trip would include a flight to Kyiv.

Works for me since I think I’ll end up skipping the Scud ride.

Yup, just looking at that map (tiny, yes, but…), I can tell it needs Laurel’s Jailbreak and south Baltimore’s Heavy Seas Brewery—no, not the alehouse (which miiight be one of those pins in Bawlmer), but the actual brewery, which is spitting distance from the main bike route between here and the Inner Harbor.

This is how I know I will not win this competition ;)

Yup. Some of us bike to Annapolis for a cup of coffee. Others to Mobtown for a beer. Never underestimate the power of quixotic obsessions.

(And, truth be told, the ride up to Baltimore’s pretty cool and worth doing if you know the route; just make sure you do it when the breweries are open)

I noticed as I started looking at these that some are only open for 4 hours on a Saturday or something like that. Would suck to roll up and be stymied by a locked door.

Not to give anyone ideas, but you don’t need to ride FROM YOUR HOME or BACK TO YOUR HOME from these beer trips. Conceivably you could drive to [someplace far away] and then bike around to a few breweries, reconnect with your car and drive home. Alternatively, you could bike to Mad Fox, Caboose, Old Ox and Lost Rhino and stumble home via Metro.
