Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 40 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because it is all made in Shirlington.
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

Let me know if you have any questions and HAVE FUN!

Failed attempt. Sehkraft Brewing in Arlington says they brew on their website, but upon arrival I was informed that they are about 5 weeks away from starting to brew. So I had this delightful Imperial Stout from Goochland, VA. Licking hole Creek Coffee Obsession at 11.5%. They poured it at ice cold crap lite temperature so I had to hold it for 10 minutes to warm it up. Nice, soft coffee notes. I’m about halfway through as I write this and noticing the 11.5% status, not via taste, but via my lack of dinner. This is a really nice beer. It’s a damn shame they didn’t make it here.

When did you go there? I was there tonight (Monday night) because my son was playing in the band.

It was tonight! I left about 3 or 4 songs in, I was digging the brass!

Yeah, the trumpets were great. My son was on the keyboard. They are all from Arlington and go to the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Sorry, I had totaled up your entries but it somehow didn’t make it to my post. You still have a ways to go for the win.

If my wife would ever post to the forum, she’d be tied with me, since we’ve done all our visits together. Alas.

Franklins Twisted Turtle Pale Ale by Jon, on Flickr

Twisted Turtle pale ale: I didn’t realize this was an ESB until after I ordered it. It probably should have been warmer but they probably aren’t set up for that. I could TOTALLY taste the English Kent Golding hops. They’re totally different from those other hops.

Private IPA – really nice start, not quite perfect on the finish

Highland Hugh – wee heavy scotch ale – staff recommendation. It was pleasant. Didn’t taste like 8%.

Not only that, but if my KIDS were old enough to taste at all the breweries we dragged them to, they’d have 8 and 7.

    Denizens
McRamerez, a Tequilla barrel-aged Irish style export stout. 7.7%.
Good stout, nice body. After a few sips the tequila starts to show some bite at the back of the mouth. Is different, but I think a bit distracting from the beer itself. If you don’t mind that kind of bite, you’ll probably like this one.

    3 Stars
    Raspberry Dissonance

I chose this one because it was only 3.6% and I want to make it home tonight. Tastes like a tart raspberry.

Saison, 5%. Traditional farmhouse ale. Light and crisp with hints of apple and pear

Nice beer. More lager-y than a saison in my opinion, but I’m enjoying it.

    Right Proper, Brookland
    Häxan
    Robust Porter 7%
Named after the Scandinavian silent film documentary on witchcraft, Häcan is Brewer with an assortment of roasted malts and oats. Enjoy notes of coffee and chocolate frosting in this full bodied Poe we. Take home a growler and have it with vanilla ice cream. Your life will never be the same.

This would probably be fantastic with ice cream. It’s pretty good now.
