    Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge
Never Give an ELITE Cyclist an Even Break

NOTE: Excluded activities: If you post an activity to Strava during the competition period which is not an outdoor bike ride, then it should have the string “#NoBAFS” in the activity name.

Freezing Saddles! The Epic Adventure of a band of ELITE Cyclists, facing the challenges of the wild wild wild bike paths. Confronting the darkest of evenings, the coldest of mornings, and the stupidest of Ninjas – these brave cyclists challenge each other because, if they didnt, they might have to actually do some work during the day.

The saga runs January 1 until the last day of Winter, March 20. It will conclude with a March Madness Playoff that someone will probably design. There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

    Tribes (teams):

    • Composed of ~5 riders or less
    • For riders from the #bikedc, Washington DC Bike Forum general community (Washington DC greater metropolitan area)
    • Volunteer Captains (captains will address any data problems, negotiate or cause confusion, and provide motivational seminars);
    • This is a ten-gallon hat tournament. Riders will be randomly assigned to tribes based on self declared average weekly mileage and days cycled. Tribes will be created so that each tribes’s average weekly point score is roughly equal to everyone else’s. To achieve this, tribes may be composed of differing numbers of riders.
    • No late sign ups.
    • Interested cyclists must sign up by December 25 Midnight – Tribes will be announced within a couple days.

Scoring: Riders will receive 10 points for each day and 1 point for each mile ridden. Minimum ride is 1 mile. The tribe’s score will be the sum of the tribe members (indoor trainers do not count- you must be freezing in the saddle outside).

Backend: STRAVA (please sign up for an account, and join the “Bike Arlington” club on STRAVA – you should be able to enter data manually or automatically. Additional information will be posted here on the forum.)

This is a self organized group activity based on consensus. No one is in charge or running this thing. Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk.

Be Brave. Be Bold. Be…. questful! In the words of Hedley Lamarr:

Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency on the bike paths. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

For what its worth, Team 11 is still last. Greg had not gotten his butt off of Team 11 (he went to team 1) – so I just booted his ass. And there is another gentleman on Team 11 who is not actually on Team 11 which I guess I will need to deal with.

Have no fear – you are still not in last.

Sun is out. Get your butt in the saddle!

You all are motivating people. I just passed 500 miles for the month. I know that some of you routinely have months that are double that (and thankfully one of those “some of you” is on Team 10 with me!) but for me that is either a new, or close to new, record. It’s been fun. Thanks!

I tend to think of them as a collective bad influence.

    This month 389 miles
    Last month 174 miles

June, july, and august of this past year had more miles in them (and august not by much), but that’s it. It has been fun.;)

Following in the steps of KayakCindi, I just finished my first ever 500 mile month! I never imagined that I would ever do that, and I know it’s a record for me. Thanks for all the encouragement and fun!

Congrats to all who rode through January and especially to those who knocked out really amazing milege – there are lots of you who did that!

    p.s. for Ron Alford,

Last night I “updated” the software in my Garmin Edge 500, and now it’s showing an incorrect date and time.

Update: I think the Garmin re-set itself after I played with it. I went out for another ride and all seems well now. Thanks for the suggestions!

    p.s. for Ron Alford,
In the meantime, can we fix this somehow so my team isn’t penalized just because the ride was recorded as Jan 30 at 10:43 pm or something, when it should have been Jan 31 at 8 a.m.?

Easy answer: Get out there and ride another mile – you still have 3 hours left! :)
Medium answer: Add a dummy mile for today, ride a mile tomorrow without logging.
Harder: If you send me the file, I might be able to edit and fix the start time. Then you’d delete the old activity and add the new one.

moderately easy answer – delete the suspect entry, and replace it with a manual entry.

    Ron,

We were thinking alike once my brain thawed out from the earlier ride – I got out there and rode another mile! Thanks everyone. I think I’m good now. :-)

You girls rock! Keep up the good riding! I rode 418 miles farther in January than December.

When you say it’s been fun, it sounds like you’re done. I hope you know we have another month and a half to go! :p

I had my second biggest monthly total since I began keeping track in March. August was more because I was trying to get second place locally in the National Bike Challenge, and you didn’t make it easy.

I had my biggest month ever — by almost 300 miles. Take that, August. Thanks to everyone for the push, especially Team Five Guys.
