    Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge
Never Give an ELITE Cyclist an Even Break

NOTE: Excluded activities: If you post an activity to Strava during the competition period which is not an outdoor bike ride, then it should have the string “#NoBAFS” in the activity name.

Freezing Saddles! The Epic Adventure of a band of ELITE Cyclists, facing the challenges of the wild wild wild bike paths. Confronting the darkest of evenings, the coldest of mornings, and the stupidest of Ninjas – these brave cyclists challenge each other because, if they didnt, they might have to actually do some work during the day.

The saga runs January 1 until the last day of Winter, March 20. It will conclude with a March Madness Playoff that someone will probably design. There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

    Tribes (teams):

    • Composed of ~5 riders or less
    • For riders from the #bikedc, Washington DC Bike Forum general community (Washington DC greater metropolitan area)
    • Volunteer Captains (captains will address any data problems, negotiate or cause confusion, and provide motivational seminars);
    • This is a ten-gallon hat tournament. Riders will be randomly assigned to tribes based on self declared average weekly mileage and days cycled. Tribes will be created so that each tribes’s average weekly point score is roughly equal to everyone else’s. To achieve this, tribes may be composed of differing numbers of riders.
    • No late sign ups.
    • Interested cyclists must sign up by December 25 Midnight – Tribes will be announced within a couple days.

Scoring: Riders will receive 10 points for each day and 1 point for each mile ridden. Minimum ride is 1 mile. The tribe’s score will be the sum of the tribe members (indoor trainers do not count- you must be freezing in the saddle outside).

Backend: STRAVA (please sign up for an account, and join the “Bike Arlington” club on STRAVA – you should be able to enter data manually or automatically. Additional information will be posted here on the forum.)

This is a self organized group activity based on consensus. No one is in charge or running this thing. Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk.

Be Brave. Be Bold. Be…. questful! In the words of Hedley Lamarr:

Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency on the bike paths. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

I was lucky, my fracture was at the tippity-top of the femur grand trochanter (knob where muscles attach). It’s been 4-1/2 weeks and has healed quickly, I stopped using the cane last friday and went on first ride last Sunday (almost exactly 4 weeks).

I’m just a little bit broken, hope to be limp-free in next 2 weeks.

work all day sun streaming in window, now time to bike home and it is cloudy and doesn’t look at all pretty. What a bummer.

At least the rain passed through quickly. Good thing because I need an extra long ride home since Dirt passed me at the top of the leaderboard. ;)

I took yesterday off from work as I wasn’t feeling well…not so good for my points total, but great for my legs, which felt really fresh this morning.

A mile on a bike when ailing is just the thing to revive you a bit.

If Dirt was on team 11, they would still be in last place.

Ride home was great. Hardly anyone on the trail. And yes the sunset was beautiful.

I thought I was going to just do a quick mile, but before I was able to go, I found out my wife had a happy hour and wouldn’t be home to walk the dog (her exercise, not her assigned chore or anything)…so I walked him 3 miles and called it a day. I added a few miles on my commute this evening and will add some more tomorrow to make up the difference.

Rode to work today for the first time in more than five years – and it definitely wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t signed up for Freezing Saddles. Granted: today the saddle was hardly freezing, in fact, this was one of the nicest days for bike riding I can remember, but I think that only proves the point. I needed a nudge to get myself out of the car and onto the bike even on a beautiful day, and signing up for this friendly competition provided exactly the right nudge.

Will have to get the office logistics arranged better to ride on the really crappy days, but that’ll come together eventually – and in the meantime, holy crap was it nice to ride to work today! Many thanks to all the Freezing Saddles organizers for helping make this happen!!

If it is going to be in the 60s this weekend, any interest in a group ride? I am thinking go out the WOD and have lunch somewhere? Something like

11 am Ballston to Vienna or Reston for lunch

I was looking back at my numbers from last year. What is truely crazy about this contest is that through the first 10 days I am only about 10 miles shy of my first 10 days of the National Bike Challenge last May when it was a little bit warmer, and a lot brighter than it is right now.

Having a blast, see you out on the trails!

Would love to come with, but I’m out of town this weekend from first thing Saturday morning through probably 2pm or so on Sunday. But I’m definitely going ride on Sunday, (unless I get back waaay too late), just to enjoy a nice shortsleeved January bike ride!
