    Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge
Never Give an ELITE Cyclist an Even Break

NOTE: Excluded activities: If you post an activity to Strava during the competition period which is not an outdoor bike ride, then it should have the string “#NoBAFS” in the activity name.

Freezing Saddles! The Epic Adventure of a band of ELITE Cyclists, facing the challenges of the wild wild wild bike paths. Confronting the darkest of evenings, the coldest of mornings, and the stupidest of Ninjas – these brave cyclists challenge each other because, if they didnt, they might have to actually do some work during the day.

The saga runs January 1 until the last day of Winter, March 20. It will conclude with a March Madness Playoff that someone will probably design. There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

    Tribes (teams):

    • Composed of ~5 riders or less
    • For riders from the #bikedc, Washington DC Bike Forum general community (Washington DC greater metropolitan area)
    • Volunteer Captains (captains will address any data problems, negotiate or cause confusion, and provide motivational seminars);
    • This is a ten-gallon hat tournament. Riders will be randomly assigned to tribes based on self declared average weekly mileage and days cycled. Tribes will be created so that each tribes’s average weekly point score is roughly equal to everyone else’s. To achieve this, tribes may be composed of differing numbers of riders.
    • No late sign ups.
    • Interested cyclists must sign up by December 25 Midnight – Tribes will be announced within a couple days.

Scoring: Riders will receive 10 points for each day and 1 point for each mile ridden. Minimum ride is 1 mile. The tribe’s score will be the sum of the tribe members (indoor trainers do not count- you must be freezing in the saddle outside).

Backend: STRAVA (please sign up for an account, and join the “Bike Arlington” club on STRAVA – you should be able to enter data manually or automatically. Additional information will be posted here on the forum.)

This is a self organized group activity based on consensus. No one is in charge or running this thing. Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk.

Be Brave. Be Bold. Be…. questful! In the words of Hedley Lamarr:

Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency on the bike paths. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Sorry – we set the rules, he’s just playing us :)
We have not, however, set the the prize table. I suggest a `special` first prize: For every southern hemispheric point used to win the competition, said rider gets one ice cube in the chamois.

Personally, I would like to register a vote against a team challenge that falls immediately on the heels of Freezing Saddles. I’m already tired and week #1 isn’t even finished :) If things remain close, I am sure there will be some extreme mileage intensity in the final weeks of this race. And then I have a 6-hour MTB race on the 23rd. :) Yes, little violin. Obviously I’ll participate with the team if that’s what everyone else wants to do, but it seems to me that Freezing Saddles *is* the competition and we don’t need more ways to win; one will be more than enough for Team Ocho. ;) Assuming Kevin decides to return from his warm beach, anyway. I would be all for some sort of competition (using same teams, if appropriate) later — say, for the hottest month of the summer?

On a completely unrelated note, is there any interest in putting together [non-team-specific] cycling kits (or just jerseys) for the freezing saddles competition? I worked with Primal Wear most recently for our corporate team kit and we were able to do full custom bibs & jerseys for $150 (obviously things like quantity are important factors). [These would probably be summer jerseys, admittedly.] Anyway, just throwing it out there; I have very little artistic ability/inclination, but if this is interesting to a significant number of people *and* someone is willing to do the art work, I volunteer to work with the sales reps & see what we could do. If the desire would be for just jerseys, may be better to use someone like Jek Sports (have worked with them in the past too), etc.

Hi group – I think I must have messed something up when I tried to sign up for Freezing Saddles a couple weeks ago. (I’m listed on the contest results page with the right Strava account: Joe Birkenstock, http://app.strava.com/athletes/1154396, but I’m not assigned to a team.)

Probably not back from break yet. His office is next door to me. He is on sabbatical from his normal day job.

JoeB – sign up like Ron suggested. I will be making late team assignments on Sunday. All mileage counts from Jan 1 (so ride). If demand is sufficiently high, there will be a team 11. As of right now, we have four late sign ups. Where you get placed will depend on your November/December handicap score.

I’m actually a little surprised more of the feds on this forum are around given the 27th pay period extending when you can be burning 2012 “use-or-lose” leave.

Some of us “Feds” are so vital our work would collapse without us. I fear the Army would not work if I were not here at work tabulating numbers. oh wait that isn’t it, I am here because I take to many days off during the summer. I can’t help it I love the sun. I still cannot believe I am even out on my bike in the winter. But I will say I am sure I could win the prize for the most layers. I wear 4 layers on top, bike shorts and two layers of pants (one tights and one a bit looser) all of these are running clothes that are supposed to be for extreme cold. Two pairs of socks, a hat that goes over my whole head and covers my face. Glasses and two pairs of gloves. i am going to be so much lighter come summer time just because i will get to peel off all these clothes, but I am warm. Told you I hate cold. :)

Just a casual observation that I’m sure you already know, when you are cycling versus running, the big difference on what makes you cold is wind (either what you are generating or what is hitting you from nature). That means that it is more important to have a wind blocking layer on the bike that may be missing from your running outfit.

I made this mistake yesterday. The thermometer on my garage read 23 degrees so I put on another layer – which was a complete disaster. I got sweaty, fogged up my glasses, and ended up being just as cold and that much slower :(.

my top layer is a wind jacket. I am surprised at how comfortable I am. I thought it would be a lot worse of course I don’t know how cold it is going to get. I am hoping for a warm jan, feb and march.
