    Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge
Never Give an ELITE Cyclist an Even Break

NOTE: Excluded activities: If you post an activity to Strava during the competition period which is not an outdoor bike ride, then it should have the string “#NoBAFS” in the activity name.

Freezing Saddles! The Epic Adventure of a band of ELITE Cyclists, facing the challenges of the wild wild wild bike paths. Confronting the darkest of evenings, the coldest of mornings, and the stupidest of Ninjas – these brave cyclists challenge each other because, if they didnt, they might have to actually do some work during the day.

The saga runs January 1 until the last day of Winter, March 20. It will conclude with a March Madness Playoff that someone will probably design. There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

    Tribes (teams):

    • Composed of ~5 riders or less
    • For riders from the #bikedc, Washington DC Bike Forum general community (Washington DC greater metropolitan area)
    • Volunteer Captains (captains will address any data problems, negotiate or cause confusion, and provide motivational seminars);
    • This is a ten-gallon hat tournament. Riders will be randomly assigned to tribes based on self declared average weekly mileage and days cycled. Tribes will be created so that each tribes’s average weekly point score is roughly equal to everyone else’s. To achieve this, tribes may be composed of differing numbers of riders.
    • No late sign ups.
    • Interested cyclists must sign up by December 25 Midnight – Tribes will be announced within a couple days.

Scoring: Riders will receive 10 points for each day and 1 point for each mile ridden. Minimum ride is 1 mile. The tribe’s score will be the sum of the tribe members (indoor trainers do not count- you must be freezing in the saddle outside).

Backend: STRAVA (please sign up for an account, and join the “Bike Arlington” club on STRAVA – you should be able to enter data manually or automatically. Additional information will be posted here on the forum.)

This is a self organized group activity based on consensus. No one is in charge or running this thing. Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk.

Be Brave. Be Bold. Be…. questful! In the words of Hedley Lamarr:

Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency on the bike paths. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Awesome — Will Lynn has three days on Jan. 2. However, he’s riding in Australia, so it’s already Jan 3 there! Plus it’s summer!

Come back from the future, vvill! You’re really messing with our sh**!

Ron: I assume if these people have shown up, they would show up on the scoreboard.

Yes, they show up about 15 minutes after they join their team.

    For everyone:
I changed the scoreboard so that it ignores any activity with “#NoBAFS” in the title, so please stick that in the name of any activity which isn’t an outdoor bike ride. The scoreboard has instructions on this, in case you forget.

I’m seriously considering tanking this week’s results to get Megabeth on our team ;) Nah I’m far too competative for that.

Also, full disclosure, I didn’t ride on New Year’s Day, so I’m already down those daily points…

But you could have come out and ridden a route that looks like a rifle pointed directly at DaveK’s house!

I took a long ride this mornign which gave me more time to think. I came up with a proposal for the end of winter 10-team tournament and thought I would post to start the discussion since this contest was built around consensis:

Proposed rules for 10-team March Madness Tournament (version 1)

    1. 10 teams – all teams get to participate, i.e. no teams on the bubble.
    2. modified 8-team single elimination tourney. Each “game” in the tournament will be a head to head match up of two seeded teams (1 to 10) or 3 seeded teams (for first round only) each team recording miles over a weeks’s time and battle head to head. Winner of head-to head (or head-to-head-to-head) matchups advances to next round. Losers are out of the tournament and commense trash talking other losers.
    3. Seeding as follows: positions 1 through 10 according to total points at 6:00pm Sunday March 17th.
    First Round: (March 18th-24th)
    1 vs 8 vs 10
    4 vs 5
    3 vs 6
    2 vs 7 vs 9

    Final Four: (March 25th – 31st)
    Winner [1-8-10] vs Winner [4-5]
    Winner [3-6] vs Winner [2-7-9]

    Championship Round: (April 1st – 7th)
    Winner [1-8-10-4-5] vs Winner [3-6-2-7-9]

Overall champion announced 6:00 pm April 7th.

    4. Matches. Same points scored as now (10 for each day, and 1 pt per mile each day). Total points from 12:01 am Monday morning through 6:00 pm Sunday evening will be counted for a team’s score. This will allow the computer or scoring folks to tally results and post winners and new brackets. All rides must be entered by 6:00pm Sunday evening to be counted for the match score.

These times are proposed and arguements could be made to make them later or earlier.
I am not a computer guy but I figured some of you may have fun writing the code to put this thing together.
    Any thoughts?

Since this Freezing Saddles competition is really taking off (and it’s all completely grassroots run by the cycling community, which makes me VERY happy!!), BikeArlington would like to provide prizes for the winners.

We’ve got a few surprises up our sleeves, so stay tuned for more on what these prizes could be!

Late sign ups will be subbed based on the November/December handicaps, not based on current scores. (nice try tho)

R U volunteering to be master of the tournament?

At worst, I can make a simple Google page that shows the progress of the tournament. Ron might also have some magic.

This is of course most excellent. Support from Bike Arlington (and maybe goDCgo and WABA??) is most welcome by those of us who like bright shiny bicycle bling!

    In addition

PROPOSAL: As we all know, we are all in this for the Pointless Prizes that were promised. From the original:

There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

What I propose is that each team come up with an official Pointless Prize, to be awarded – presented – imposed – inflicted – at the final happy hour. The Pointless Prizes should be for various massive achievements as creatively concocted as possible. Of course first place and second place – but maybe individual highest score – most miles ridden during official snow days – most sleeze days accumulated (days where the rider rode just 1 mile to get the ten points) – best Mardi Gras costume – poorest excuse for not riding – best ride route shape (see Tim’s rifle above) – ride furthest away from Wash DC (okay vvill would already win). Be creative.

Proposal: each team creates a pointless prize. Those prizes should be coordinated through a prize coordinator so that they dont duplicate and work well together. If you make a team prize, remember there are ~5 members to a team. Prizes will be awarded during the happy hour.

I can coordinate this but would be more than glad for someone to volunteer to do this.

And of course Bike Arlington Swag is most excellently welcome.

    Thoughts?

    B

So in addition to sitting on our freezing saddles, now we have homework, too?!
