Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge
Never Give an ELITE Cyclist an Even Break

NOTE: Excluded activities: If you post an activity to Strava during the competition period which is not an outdoor bike ride, then it should have the string “#NoBAFS” in the activity name.

Freezing Saddles! The Epic Adventure of a band of ELITE Cyclists, facing the challenges of the wild wild wild bike paths. Confronting the darkest of evenings, the coldest of mornings, and the stupidest of Ninjas – these brave cyclists challenge each other because, if they didnt, they might have to actually do some work during the day.

The saga runs January 1 until the last day of Winter, March 20. It will conclude with a March Madness Playoff that someone will probably design. There will be a Happy Hour at the end with many pointless trophies.

Tribes (teams):

• Composed of ~5 riders or less
• For riders from the #bikedc, Washington DC Bike Forum general community (Washington DC greater metropolitan area)
• Volunteer Captains (captains will address any data problems, negotiate or cause confusion, and provide motivational seminars);
• This is a ten-gallon hat tournament. Riders will be randomly assigned to tribes based on self declared average weekly mileage and days cycled. Tribes will be created so that each tribes’s average weekly point score is roughly equal to everyone else’s. To achieve this, tribes may be composed of differing numbers of riders.
• No late sign ups.
• Interested cyclists must sign up by December 25 Midnight – Tribes will be announced within a couple days.

Scoring: Riders will receive 10 points for each day and 1 point for each mile ridden. Minimum ride is 1 mile. The tribe’s score will be the sum of the tribe members (indoor trainers do not count- you must be freezing in the saddle outside).

Backend: STRAVA (please sign up for an account, and join the “Bike Arlington” club on STRAVA – you should be able to enter data manually or automatically. Additional information will be posted here on the forum.)

This is a self organized group activity based on consensus. No one is in charge or running this thing. Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk.

Be Brave. Be Bold. Be…. questful! In the words of Hedley Lamarr:

Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out runaway decency on the bike paths. Now you men will only be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

I am sure I will find out shortly, but I assume the kickass leaderboard will figure out that my ride home should only be credited the miles and not another 10 points for the trip home. Is that correct?

Do people think that would be okay? I don’t want to be too stalkerish.

Looks like our deficit is not terrible, but no one wants to surrender a deficit off the top.

OMG – it’s in Haskell. That’s awesome.

I'm sure rcannon can illuminate. I too build my work life around open-source software; I love that this is open-source.

It looks like he’s also flooring when calculating the score itself:
userScore score = 10 * days score + floor (miles score)
But it also looks like if you were to do two rides in a single day, say 4.9mi and 1.1mi, it would be scored “correctly” as 6mi. If you were to do those same rides on separate days, they would be scored as 4mi and 1mi respectively. I’m not 100% sure about my interpretation of the code, so I’d be interested in hearing from the author.
Ben
renderScores scores = ol $ do
mapM_ row $ reverse $ sort scores
where
row us = li $ do
a ! href (toValue $ http://app.strava.com/athletes/” ++ (show $ uid us)) $ toHtml $ name us
_ <- “: “
td $ toHtml $ userScore us

This depends if you stay overnight at work.

Yes, this is correct. I keep track of days ridden and total miles separately, then calculate the score when it comes time to display. The rides can even be over separate days – so with the given mileage over two days you’d have 26 points.

In theory, you could ride .9999 miles for all 80 days of the competition to get a total of 79 points (and never get the daily bonus).

All right, so who’s gonna take out the chick on the purple bike?

Awesome — Will Lynn has three days on Jan. 2. However, he’s riding in Australia, so it’s already Jan 3 there! Plus it’s summer!

Last Call: It looks like we are close to consensus on this. I put this out as a last call for comments. If this is stable, I will put this in effect tomorrow and will activate a late sign up form.

Captains: Please confirm these people are still missing.

Ron: I assume if these people have shown up, they would show up on the scoreboard.

Prob: Some people, when they signed up, did not provide a STRAVA user name as requested. Captains are now having difficult finding them. The teams were announced on Dec. 27, a week ago, giving the missing people plenty of time to show up.

Freezing Saddles is a handicap game, where each team is suppose to start with an equal handicap: 567 (handicap based on november and december average weekly mileage and average days per week ridden). Since some team members are missing, that has significantly effected the handicaps of those respective teams (as noted previously).

Solution: Allow late sign ups to be substituted for absent team members, where the individual handicap of the late sign up does not put the team handicap over 570. (For example, if a team is currently -160 off the average handicap, that team could add a player whose individual handicap does not exceed 160).

Missing people have had a week to show up, and they did fail to provide a valid user name. Therefore, a late sign up will be turned on Thursday, and late sign ups will start being added on Sunday. Late sign ups will be assigned to teams with the greatest deficit first (the late sign up with the largest handicap will be assigned to the team with the greatest deficit). Late sign ups can continue being added to the game as long as teams have deficits and assigning the late sign ups does not cause the team handicap to exceed 570.

The reason for this timing is so that I can do the administrative backend stuff during the weekend and not the work week.

Missing people will remain on teams until they are replaced. If missing people appear, they can be assigned to a team as a late sign up.
