Just thought I’d start one central post for both requesting volunteers (in hopes someone will volunteer) and listing existing volunteers (so people can coordinate among themselves). I’ll update this as people register and volunteer, to show who has volunteered for what. Please feel free to comment if you didn’t volunteer at registration and want to volunteer for something now.

    Core functions

    Hozn (back end software)
    cvcalhoun (registration)
    Sunyata (team assignments)
Amalitza (Sticky post and other communications if needed)
Judd (e-mail with information and next steps to registrants after registration closes)

    Group rides

    Calista
    ctankcycles
    glennpstevens
    Drucycles
komorebi (I’d like to organize coffee rides based on the silly National ___ Days. For example, on National Blueberry Pancake Day, we’d ride to get buckwheat blueberry pancakes at Eastern Market.)
bluerider (I would be willing to organize group rides for my team.)
ginacico (Announce the occasional ride to Arlington public art sites, coffee shops, or other warm and fuzzy locations. Because riding around alone in the dark when it’s cold really sucks.)
    Bikeeveryday
    drevil
    pdubs
    QuikAF77
    Hancockbs
    reji
Judd (I’ll be offering a monthly fun ride open to the whole competition.)
    eivey72
    leafant
    ewilliams0305
    Steve O
consularrider (I will cheerfully lead rides in the Taunus Hills for those who want some climbing, or along the Nidda River if you prefer flat terrain.)
    CBGanimal
    Rod Smith
    davidq
    SteveH
    Luis Filipe
    SouthernDCist
    whunke
TriGirlSara (I’ll be happy to organize group rides to do mindless laps around Hains Point at a leisurely pace, or a group ride to one of the fine drinking establishments in DC.)
    Greenbelt
bikenurse (i will organize group rides out of Proteus Bicycles in College Park Merrland. Road rides, social rides, trail rides, coffee rides, beer rides….)
    kwarkentien
    kjdtarheel
pkeit32 (I lead a Sunday Shop ride at Spokes Etc Quaker Lane. It is A,BB,B pace but is no drop. We leave at 9AM throughout the winter. Bagels and coffee provided by Spokes Etc. immediately follow the ride.)

    Happy Hours

    CBGanimal, coordinator
    Edelweiss
    CPTJohnC
    trey197
    eivey72
    wheels&wings
    leafant
    reji
    aeagle23
    CalistaTempest
    secstate
    f148vr
    Williampp3
    ianh
    WeirdBeard
historygeek (Will happily sit behind a table and sign in people at the opening happy hour, or something like that.)
    kwarkentien
    kjdtarheel
    jebski1956

    Prizes

    Steve O (coordinator)
Alcova Cyclist (horseshoes & hand grenades (riders who ride every day but 1 (or maybe 2))
    Vicegrip (Jan 1 longest ride.)
Brünø Moore (It’s gonna involve coffee. Of course there’s going to be coffee.)
Henry (Pleasing Sleazing Saddles. BikeArlington will give swag to anyone who takes a non-rider (someone who has not ridden in a year or more) on a Sleaze Ride. Photo evidence required. Exact swag is TBD, but would love to hear what would motivate ppl to act.)
Arlingtonrider (most Hains Point laps during the contest period)
schvin (thinking side bet of most miles off-road. prize tbd, but probably a crowler from an interesting brewery.)
creadinger (Something along the lines of coldest ride(s) again. Operation Deep Freeze prize.)
    Allan C (Best Strava art.)
    ewilliams0305
    Steve O
    sunyata
Judd (Will likely offer some sort of pointless prize TBD.)
wheels&wings (Perhaps a prize or two, or three or four, or maybe more. We will repeat the London Bridge Prize, for sure (and I’m not planning to win it myself)!)
leafant (I can work on getting donations from Chrome &/or Icebreaker Merino!)
consularrider (I will award a pointless prize for the rider who drinks the most varieties (brands from different breweries) produced in the Bundesrepublik Deutschland. I will be excluded from winning my own pointless prize.)
lordofthemark (Either the slowest rider prize again, or assisting in some other way.)
    Rod Smith
    sjclaeys
Reba (The Attaboy (kept participating in FS in spite of unforeseen circumstances))
Rimas (Lots of bicycle parts laying around that could be used as a pointless prize.)
Kitty (The Michigan “You Call THAT a Snow Day” Prize is back! Mitten-State brewed craft beer goes to whoever rides during each OPM designated snow day (ties broken by mileage))
Fast Friendly Guy (Pointless prize or side bet I have 2 great prizes, so I’m going to initiate 2 pointless prizes. Not exactly sure yet about the exact nature of the challenges.)
    ianh
kwarkentien (I’ll probably award a prize for first 10 people to complete 5 laps around HP.)

(Others are listed in the 2017 Freezing Saddles Pointless Prizes thread.)

    Other

Nadine (I don’t know what I’d be available for at this point, but certainly if there’s a need I hope people will reach out so I can volunteer….. )
    vern (Something…)
Emm (Just let me know where you have a gap in volunteers and I’ll fill in, this is my first year (I got hurt last year early on) so I’m not really sure what any of the activities require…)
jrenaut (help hozn with computer stuff)
Steve O (Freezing Saddles Last Night Haynes Point Party, other stuff)
    wheels&wings (TBD)
bob_dc (I’m new to this, have many friends that did it last year (I was injured). Since I’m new I’m not sure how/where I can help but I’m willing.)
Bob James (I hope to do something to better participate in the event, but don’t want to commit to something at this time)
aeagle23 (commuter coffees in the morning)
chris_s (Pretty data visualizations like heatmaps.)
majalya (Extra set of hands (and legs) for any volunteers that need it. Scavenger hunt on two wheels!)
rachelwright (I have no idea what volunteering opportunities there are – this is my first time!)

I will once again volunteer to coordinate pointless prizes. I will start a separate thread.

I’ve now got the initial list of volunteers posted. If you didn’t volunteer at registration, feel free to comment below on what you’d like to do.

I forgot to mention that the pointless prize I’m volunteering for is for the most Hains Point laps during the contest period.

I would really like to get involved this year as a volunteer (unless something catastrophic happens with work/travel). I indicated a bunch of things on my registration form, which I’m sure will be updated here in due course.

    My question for the moment is when is the kick-off event? (Or an approximate idea?) I recall we had one last year, but I don’t remember if it was in December or not. We’re getting into that time of year that the sooner dates get into my calendar, the less likely I am to overbook. ^^;;

Ooh! Looks like there will be no shortage of group rides! Ahh! Calista is riding FS! :)

Join the FS calendar, upon which upcoming events may be found (well, theoretically, it’s just getting started).

    Try this link: https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=cjljOHA3amxoamppa2xhZmtrZXRsMWpxcHNAZ3JvdXAuY2FsZW5kYXIuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbQ

Let me know if it works.

Works great, thank you! I use Google Calendars anyway, so I just had to hit the little “+ Google Calendar” icon in the lower right to add it to my list of calendars.

I received it directly from your gmail invitation–thank you so much! My Google phone now tells me when I’m sleeping through Coffee Club. ;)

That said, seeing when the registration for BAFS ends, I can surmise that the kick-off event won’t be until January?

Yes, all rides from January 1 count, but we typically have the kick-off event, at which teams are announced, sometime in the first week or so of January.

May I suggest that that we send out some sort of e-mail between the close of registration and the start of the contest outlining the rules, advertising happy hour and offering encouragement? As a new person last year I was at times a bit confused at the start of the competition. There’s also a lot of folks that miss posted information on the forums or are overwhelmed by the activity on the forums.

I’d be happy to volunteer to do this.

Sounds like a great idea! (Of course, ideas always sound greater when the person proposing that something be done is also proposing to do the work.) Please check your Inbox; I’ve sent you a private message with information on how to get the contact information for the registrants.

I did do this last year. If you’d like to do it this year, though, I’m happy to pass on the task. ;) Did you not get last year’s email, or it didn’t provide the information you needed? I kept it short under the theory more people would actually read it that way.

Again, if I may promote myself, this is why the STICKY POST (link) is there. It is updated regularly, I promise. It currently does not have (for example) happy hour information because no one has arranged happy hour yet, but when there is information to post, I will post it. Again, I would like feedback– do you not think it provides adequate information (either not enough information, or too much to read, or not well explained), or did you/do you not realize it is there? I’m trying to make sure that people (especially new people) have a way to find the basic information they need, so to the extent that I’m not accomplishing that, please let me know where the problems are (and if you have thoughts on how to do it differently).
