Seems like overkill.

On the trail, probably. On the road in Bethesda, with a lot of other lights? I need all the help I can get!

ParticipantI’m beginning to think cycling accessory companies are paying off state DOTs *not* to improve infrastructure just so they can sell us stuff.
(Just like dentists are really behind Halloween).

I so quickly cross that line from cold to clammy, that I think ALL cycling jackets should have pit zips. But so many of them don’t. My mission is to get good at sewing the zippers in myself.
Last year I gave Peter one of the Zap Versa (convertible) jackets as a gift. He gives it a similar review, somewhat non-breathable but worth it in every other respect. They’ve got the reflective part nailed.
I’ll agree on the rather “non-breathable” comment. As a result, I can’t remember the last time I wore the sleeves; I wear the vest over my less reflective (but more breathable) Novara jacket (or t-shirt or whatever is appropriate for the weather).

ParticipantThe all over reflective thing is cool and distracting from the fact that they are not good jackets. I’ve checked them out at REI a couple of times now and when you evaluate them up close and in person as an experienced all weather rider you won’t come to a different conclusion. Im kinda ashamed to plug em but Target makes better functioning jackets for 1/4 the price if you’re -god forbid- willing to not have Hi vis reflective stuff literally sewn in.

I went to REI to check them out, and if I’m not mistaken, the current version differs from the older in that the side panels and bottom of the sleeves are now a breathable material while the older version was the reflective (and not very breathable) material throughout. Not sure I’d buy it at regular price, but if there’s some left in my size when they start blowing them out, I’ll consider picking one up.

ParticipantNow you’ve done it. I’m going to have Lemmy rasping in my head all day long.

ParticipantYou: Red Riding Hood…or at least a female cyclist wearing a red dress with white tights, long red coat with very pretty embroidery, a red hood, short boots, with woven baskets on the front and back of her bike.
Me: Checking the trail and surrounding forest for wolves before complimenting you on your awesome coat.
That was seriously a cute outfit, and the bike baskets really pulled the whole look together.

I think there was more than one of us wearing that outfit yesterday- which trail?

ParticipantMe: out for an impromptu ride from home in Arlington to a friend’s place in Reston.
You: driving a car at every road crossing without a light.Outcome: everyone stopped and waved me through with a smile. 15 miles of good cheer. What?

Me: Just starting back up the Capital Crescent Trail a little after 9:00, after stopping to hook my phone (which had died) up to a portable charger.
You: Appearing at about 1:25, you were the most reflective cyclist I believe I’ve ever seen.If only everyone on the CCT were that easy to see at night!

On further reflection (so to speak!), I think the jacket involved may have been a Proviz REFLECT 360. I just got one of those, and as you can see, it is very reflective indeed. (And the selfie doesn’t do it justice, because I had to be at kind of an angle to take the photo.)

Throwing this out there, but Specialized also makes a full reflective jacket (Deflect Reflect), but at $400, aye chihuahua!

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/apparel/deflectreflecthybridjacket/106189Yeah, I think I’ll stick with what I’ve got. Any brighter, and people coming the other way are going to be telling me to cover my light. And covering the whole jacket isn’t practical.
