ParticipantIt was a pleasure riding with you sir. And for the record I did not see even a hint of your buttocks (thankfully) and no cracks beyond those on the sidewalk…

ParticipantLoved seeing 5x the number of cyclists I normally see out in Fairfax this morning for BTWD.
Please stop riding in the gutter, it hurts my little heart and I promise it’s safer to just put yourself roundabout where a car’s right tire would be. You are a vehicle and you are traffic.
See you all again on Monday, right?

ParticipantI watched someone get off a bike at a mostly empty intersection and walk it across the crosswalk. I died a little inside.

I saw two riders coming from the King Street sidewalk to Park Center Drive at roughly 6:35. They could not have been coming from or going to a pitstop – maybe they ride all the time but I am never out that early?
Not many more people than usual to Shirlington, or even from Shirlington to CC (I did Eads) But of course from CC to Jefferson Mem. many more than usual. I was hoping for a big bunch heading along SW waterfront, but I was the only one taking the lane on Maine (one guy took the sidewalk on the other side) and I actually got passed too close on Maine, for the first time.A fair number on the Eye Street lanes, though not mobbed.

I should point out that 5x the number I normally see is precisely five cyclists. I average one.

ParticipantToday I found my coworker on the MVT biking to work for the first time! (or more accurately, he saw me ride by him at Gravely Point and called out my name). We rode the rest of the way in together. He was going to try to take Maine Ave to work, which I told him might be a nightmare, so I showed him the route along the National Mall, and then locked his bike to mine when he realized he brought the wrong key for his lock.
Next steps for him probably involve getting a bike that fits and a water bottle. But he seems pretty dedicated to riding in every day which is awesome!

Maine Avenue is getting better. New pavement smooths many rough spots allowing one to get to speed if taking the lane. Still probably not the best route for your friend, however.

That’s good to know. My fiance needs to go from Alexandria to the new USGG headquarters (DHS headquarters…someday) in Anacostia, and Maine Ave may be his only real route…

Now I feel like I should be bothering Sethpo with questions about MD football and basketball recruits.

A buddy of mine rode from Shirlington area to Bolling when he lived here. If you’d like, I can shoot him an email and see if he has any suggestions.

If you go over the Fish Market bridge, take the bumpy promenade thing past DOE to Independence, right on Independence, right on 4th, left on I, right on NJ, left on L, you should be able to get to the 11th St Bridge without touching Maine/M. It’s a little out of the way, but once you’re off Independence it’s almost all bike lanes.
