ParticipantTo the cyclist trimming the weeping willow on the MVT Sunday afternoon with a small pair of hand-held clippers so others wouldn’t smack into it while riding: bravo sir!

Participantone of the joys of commuting to USDOT – the SUV that passed me on Tingey this AM had a license plate that read CAFE-MPG. Glad to be able to say he gave me plenty of room.

Ahhh, that explains why suddenly they don’t seem to be blowing in my face every ride home. Definite thanks to that person. That’s awesome!

ParticipantYou: The female cyclist rolling up Fairview Park around 7:15am this morning.
Me: The guy walking out of the building with the locker rooms.THANK GOD! I hadn’t seen another person on a bike in the office park since like October. You made my day, even if you didn’t see me still wearing my neon yellow jacket.

Considering today’s 60-ish temp in DC, this is probably overkill, but: planning to keep the studs on one more day for the ride out to Herndon tomorrow (telecommuting today), then swap the balloon tires back on for Wed/Thu commutes out there. Fingers crossed!

ParticipantYou: stomping the ice out of your clipless shoes just east of American Dream Rd (Lane? Boulevard? Promenade?) underpass in Reston this morning.
Me: “Snow in the cleats??” (or something similar)Last time that’s gonna happen to any of us for quite some time. Yay!

ParticipantTWO found connections today, when I least expected them:
1. The schoolbus driver on Idylwood who waved me through as I waited to turn left: thank you, because I didn’t think that stream of cars would ever end. AND THEN, you stuck behind me as my tired legs dragged me on Oak St, but didn’t pull any of the dumb overtaking moves I’ve seen so many others do.
2. The SUV driver who also didn’t pull a dumb close-overtaking move and hung back as I merged from the end of the Gallows bike shoulder into traffic. I really hope you saw me wave thanks, because you are a rare breed, you.

I hate trying to merge from the end of the bike lane on Gallows to make a left on Old Courthouse. Would love to see Tysons come through on some better bike infra over there.

I was going right, but yeah, the bike lane needs to go all the way, or at least end at a less daft spot.

I always cut through behind the office buildings just before the bike lane ends. Usually I cross Rt 7 by going under the parking structure beside the Olive Garden, and then hitting the frontage road.

Participant[REDACTION] [/REDACTION]. In the word of St. Dirt, “I love all car drivers.”
And then…. and then…. in a moment…. I read a joyful playful funny comment of a cyclist ~ ~ ~ and I am in my happy place again.

ParticipantMe: The girl on a bike on Four Mile Run Drive(?, Road?) at 6:30ish this morning.
You: The guy in a black SUV parked on the side of Four Mile Run getting ready to get out of his car.Thank you SO much for looking as you were opening the door, realizing there was a girl on a bike coming, and waiting until I passed to open your door all the way.
I had plenty of room to maneuver out of your way and did, but you were super polite and waited anyway. I hope you saw my wave of appreciation as I cycled away. You made my day*!
*This is especially awesome since it is my first commute since having surgery two weeks ago. YAY!
