A detour has been installed on the Shirlington Road bridge where the Four Mile Run Trail crosses Shirlington Road. As with many detours in our region (see the West Glebe Road Bridge), it does not consider the safety of people who walk and bike.

The detour has been cleared. A new curb ramp has been installed on the east side Shirlington Road.

The bridge is on the border, with a portion in both jurisdictions. Alexandria and Arlington are both funding the replacement, with Arlington taking the lead on the project.

So, the DES site https://www.arlingtonva.us/Government/Projects/Project-Types/Transportation-Projects/West-Glebe-Road-Bridge-Reconstruction-Project says 60% design is complete, but I can’t find a link to the design on the site.

It also says the new bridge will have “wider sidewalks and separate bicycle facilities on each side of the bridge” which is good. At some point in summer 2020, when Ms Kiker started an interjurisdiction bridges group, I suggested an ArlCo/Alx task force, among BAC, BPAC, TES and DES with BAC and BPAC coordinating asks first. No one from BAC volunteered, and I am afraid I did not pursue it agressively. It looks like the bridge design itself is going to be okay (but what will the bike facilities actually look like?) That leaves the connection on the Alexandria side as an issue, but obviously we at BPAC will need to take the lead on that, in connection with our larger issues.

Relatedly, the Mt Vernon Ave/Arlington Ridge Road bridge is said to be at 30% design, with “expanded sidewalks and bike lanes in each direction.” https://www.arlingtonva.us/Government/Projects/Project-Types/Transportation-Projects/Arlington-Ridge-RoadMount-Vernon-Avenue-Bridge

On the ALX side, conditions wil be based on the Arlandria-Chirilagua plan here https://www.alexandriava.gov/uploadedFiles/planning/info/Attachment%208.1.2_Arlandria%20Chirilagua%20Small%20Area%20Plan_English.pdf

4MRT updates noted this morning (all in the area that overlaps with W&OD, so many might not have noticed the issues):
    1. The ford just north of the Arlington Mill Community Center (near the stairs) was not actually overflowing today or last week. Barely. The water level was probably less than an inch below, but it was below.
    2. The bridge near Glen Carlynn Park that washed out a couple of years ago near the dog park, while not yet open, is in place (big signs blocking it but metal structure and wood decking is there. No idea if it is fully attached and likely not inspected). So, I am guessing soon. Nice to see that progress and it was pretty quick once they started
