The driver of a Children’s National Hospital shuttle struck and killed a person biking near 10th Street and Michigan Avenue NE, near Catholic University:

WUSA had a story on it last night, as well. The story included a photo of the damaged bike so a bit more context (and just enough information to begin to speculate as to what happened).

Without speculating on this specific crash since I don’t know: I will say that it is not unusual for the Children’s Hospital shuttle buses to rush through the light at 10th and Michigan turning left onto Michigan; many nearby residents have commented to that effect after hearing the news yesterday and I have experienced that myself on numerous occasions.

The area’s ANC commissioner is planning on organizing a vigil at some point, with information to be shared in the coming days.

As an update – here’s the MPD statement about the preliminary investigation (parking shuttle bus driver turning left from 10th onto Michigan – onto the bridge over the WMATA tracks – hit a cyclist heading south on 10th. For those less familiar with the area – there’s no dedicated left turn phase for that intersection).

Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic fatality resulting from a traffic crash that occurred on Monday, March 1, 2021, at the intersection of 10th Street and Michigan Avenue, Northeast.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 11:07 am, a bicyclist was traveling southbound on 10th Street, Northeast, crossing from the north to south side of Michigan Avenue, Northeast, in a marked crosswalk. Concurrently, the operator of a 2017 Ford Bus made a left turn from 10th Street to Michigan Avenue, Northeast, and struck the bicyclist.

DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the bicyclist to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. After all life-saving efforts failed, the bicyclist was pronounced dead. The operator of the bus remained on scene.

The decedent’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Anyone who has knowledge of this incident should call police at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.

    Two things to share:
    1. Memorial for Armando Martinez-Ramos along with a ghost bike installation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, at 5:30PM. Details at fb.me/e/daYb3Zi5V
    2. A GoFundMe to help the family (4 children and 10 siblings) of the victim cover funeral expenses is at https://www.gofundme.com/f/3a8v9-help-for-funeral-expenses To steal the words or Colleen Costello (the new ANC Commissioner for that area): I know not everyone can donate, so please consider offering a prayer or loving thoughts for his family (as your faith allows), or committing to perform an act of kindness for a stranger in his memory.

Last item to share: in advance of tomorrow’s memorial, Ward 5 For All (run by one of my neighbors) has launched a petition calling on DC to improve safety conditions on Michigan Ave NE – not just at this intersection, but throughout the dangerous corridor. if this is of interest, please consider adding your name to the petition at https://mailchi.mp/8025579aa7ab/f6mj00aevq

There was a lot of media coverage of last night’s memorial, influenced in part by the 911 call center issues in this tragedy. Note of warning – the WUSA9 video has surveillance video from the nearby gas station that, though paused right before impact, may be disturbing.
