Thanks to the Safer Streets Amendment of 2022, the so-called Delaware Yield or Safety stop – which allows bicyclists (including in bike lanes or in a general travel lane) to treat a stop sign as a yield sign and proceed through without stopping is now law in the District of Columbia (this makes DC only the second state/jurisdiction on the east coast to do so – though a bunch of western states have it)

Note, you must proceed at appropriate speed, you must determine that there is no hazard, you must lawfully yield the right of way (in particular to pedestrians)

Also note that you are still required to stop at red lights and NOT proceed until you get a green light. But (as before) you may proceed on a pedestrian signal including an LPI (Leading pedestrian indicator).

I think I have seen this debated on the pages of Greater Greater Washington since about 2010? Advocacy takes time to yield results, but like water wearing away a rock, it can achieve surprising results.

Who gets to let the Park Police at Hain’s Point know this law is in effect? I doubt they will be glad to learn of the change!

More importantly, will the NPS remove the “cyclists must stop” sign attached to the stop sign across from the tennis courts?

I’m honestly not sure if the DC law applies to NPS property.

The tickets they issue cite DC statues, and you fight them in DC court.

Great news. Let us use our new right responsibly.

I stopped to let a pedestrian proceed in a crosswalk on Virginia Avenue the other day, and he seemed flabbergasted, saying something about sometimes cyclists do stop. I’d like safe and polite behavior around pedestrians to become the norm rather than the surprising exception.
