Definitely in for that. I could maybe even convince my wife to host, then the kids can just bounce off the walls in the basement and no need for babysitters.
This actually sounds totally awesome to me, except that I never got farther than pascal, and I don’t think I could even follow the conversation. And I’m totally not going to sit around just watching jrenaut’s kids bounce off the walls. I guess I’m just the wrong kind of nerd.

Nah, that just means you haven’t honed the proper nerd skills. I recommend installing Docker then playing with some pre-made images. You can have a working website running on your computer in like three minutes.

I don’t know, man. I’m a music nerd…I don’t think there’s any coming back from that. I’m also a bike nerd, but that’s not saying much around here.

I know a lot of math-music majors who would have made great programmers if Real Analysis hadn’t made them drop the math part. If you ever want to get into programming, i can get you started in five minutes. First hit is free…

Heh. I just spent some time looking around the Docker website…I have no idea what the hell that thing does. :p I dropped the math major my parents insisted I have as a “backup.” I was right…just sayin’.

The Docker website is terrible. Never look at the Docker website. The Docker product is awesome. It gives you interconnected virtual machines running locally on your computer and all you need is a few lines of config code.

Honestly, even people that deploy docker don’t understand half of it.
But, I would say that Python is a great choice for musicians. Check out https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonInMusic
But to get started this is still a great resource: http://www.diveintopython3.net/

 Yeah, I really have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m gonna stick to playing the organ—that I’m good at. I also solve a mean Rubik’s cube.

We should get a group babysitter and do a Freezing Saddles hack night. We could get so much done.
As much as I support the amazing and hard work of the FS technical support team, I cannot volunteer for this job.

As the other music major ’round here, I actually completed my minor in math. I suspect I’m equally as facile with this techie stuff as dkel, tho.
(Unlike him, neither the music major nor the math minor have paid off–at least financially)February 7, 2017 at 4:26 pm #1065588ginacico

Another music major here, with a double major in English. How the heck I landed at NG (a dream job) in the effing IT department still baffles me [short story, I fell for the lure of learning web programming in the 90s and rode the wave from development into strategy/analysis]. Now I’m scratching and clawing my way out of the tech world…. don’t know what the next thing is quite yet, but I will not suffer this torture the rest of my career years.
Did I mention how much I love and appreciate the programmers who keep FS running? Kudos to all of you!

To further derail this thread from its original intent, that’s exactly why I’m where I am right now. I had an opportunity to leave a steady job that was slowly killing me (web development for DHS) and now I have my own business that makes a little bit of money. It’s stressful sometimes, but I highly recommend it. Have a plan before you leave, though.

ParticipantOkay, back to the techie stuff. Casual Six lost a member of the team to injury. (No word on whether the injury occurred during Sixual activity.) New team member was duly appointed by Sunyata. Old team member was removed from the team’s Strava club, and new team member was added. However, several hours later, old team member still shows up on the leaderboard, and new team member does not. Can we get this fixed, please?

ParticipantSorry, I didn’t have my phone on me today, so didn’t see your PM until tonight. I am pretty sure that athlete sync only happens once a day after competition start. If this is still an issue tomorrow AM, let me/us know and we can investigate.

It’s working now–thanks!
