Watch out for ginormous orange road work signs on Powder Mill Rd on both sides of the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge in PG County. I asked the construction crew to move them (citing danger to cyclists) but they didn’t seem too receptive – so I moved them myself. They’re still in the shoulder, but won’t force you out into the street. I’m not strong enough to pick them up and put them in the grass…. I know of one cyclist who collided with a road work sign on a different section of Powder Mill Rd last fall (we have the remnants of the taco’d rim and damaged frame hanging at Proteus) – that cyclist was not seriously hurt. But our EMT friend in Utah recently responded to a call for a cyclist who had a fatal collision with a road work sign. Be careful out there!

Here’s how the signs should be placed (I encountered this roadwork later on my ride on Beaver Dam Rd)

It’s just lazy thinking and lazy workers. I’ve moved a couple signs off the bike lane when they were repaving Rhode Island near REI and when they’ve had closures on Monroe Street NE in DC. The workers in DC at least “got it” when I asked them about it, and sometimes they now put the signs in less in-the-way places.
