Friday I was passed by someone on an electric motorcycle, he was riding at about 20mph and passed me without warning on a blind corner riding up Rosslyn Hill on the Custis Trail. This was at the sound barrier just west of Quinn Street. If anyone had been coming downhill, the combined impact speed would likely have been about 40mph, enough to easily kill someone.

Are electric motorcycles allowed on the Custis?

What I mean by an electric motorcycle is one of these things that looks like a bicycle but is powered by an electric motor that is powerful enough to push a rider uphill at 20mph whether they are pedaling or not.

Timely: League of American Bicyclists eBike Report

TLDR: People broadly support low-speed pedal-assisted electric bicycles as bicycles, with their riders having the same rights and responsibilities as bicyclists. At the same time, it seems clear that there are also types of electric bicycles that are more challenging to accept.

I do notice that if I google for “Strava Custis” that the section from its west end to the top of Rosslyn Hill has been marked as “Dangerous” and Strava isn’t keeping records for it, but the section that includes the entire Custis trail to the Intersection of Death at N. Lynn Street is apparently not “Dangerous” and Strava is keeping records, including a “KOM” who averaged 24mph. That hardly seems like a responsible business model to me, and is why I’ve had no interest in being on Strava.

Well, Strava has no part in creating segments and they don’t review them AFAIK. Segments are created and flagged by users. If a user flags a segment, Strava more or less automatically (meaning, I don’t think they “review” every flag, nor do they un-flag segments) disables the leaderboard for that segment.
