ParticipantUnfortunately one of these occurred on the W&OD this evening, at the North Oak crossing, as I recall. I got there about a minute after it happened. Cyclist heading westbound, apparently the 2nd making the crossing, got hit by a SUV (no, I didn’t notice if it was a Maryland plate). The cyclist had some road rash but apparently avoided serious injury. The driver was in tears.

ParticipantGlad to hear that the injuries weren’t too severe. They should still check for damage later on. A young Senate staffer from Illinois was struck by a hit-and-run driver while she was walking in a crosswalk. She had knee and wrist injuries. She went back to Illinois to recuperate but managed to return to D.C. Unfortunately, she suffered a massive pulmonary embolism, a month after the incident. A spokesman for her father (Illinois Senate Republican leader) said that the death resulted from complications of the hit-and-run a month earlier.

ParticipantCorrection…the accident was at the Little Falls crossing, and not at Oak. I realized that riding in this morning.

ParticipantI was going to say that Oak surprises me. It gets very little traffic, and its mostly local traffic, whereas Great Falls has been the site of many accidents.

ParticipantYeah, I heard the accident (and looked up to see it) pulling my son home. Glad no one was seriously hurt. Yeah, the cyclist was telling the driver to calm down; she was hysterical.

That’s interesting though isn’t it? I’ve had the same experience where, coming out of an accident, the cyclist is the calm one and the driver is the hysterical one even though it’s the cyclist facing the imminent danger while the driver is completely safe from harm.
This spring I made a mistake coming out of a stopped red light. I thought the car next to me was turning like me when in actuality it was going straight. We bumped (thigh to fender), but at low speed, so I never came off the bike. The driver went ballistic and freaked out, even though it was me who could have been hurt. She never gave me a chance to say “my bad.” Just shrieked.

It’s not a bad thing when people get upset at the idea that someone else could have been seriously hurt.

It’s particularly horrible that the NBC website for this article features an ad link to “15 fastest four cylinder cars”
