It’s craaaaaazy. I’ve been a member of MORE for at least the last 15 years, and even though the Experticity benefit is newer, I didn’t know about it until last year. I think this is the first time I’ve bought anything through it. Even if you aren’t a mountain biker, but want some new outdoor toys, joining IMBA/MORE is totes worth it. 😎

I have been a member of Pro-motive/Experticity for years through public safety contracts. It is SUCH an awesome thing and I was really happy to hear that IMBA struck a partnership with them to add even more benefits to their membership. I have seriously made out like a bandit on outdoor and tactical gear.

MORE/IMBA memberships are only $35/year and give you access to these discounts (and more), plus your yearly dues go to maintaining the amazing trails in the area, not only for mountain bikers, but runners and hikers, too!

(sorry for the plug, but…)

Most excellent, Ginacico! Unfortunately, a few things fell through (bum friend bailing and bum leg failing) and I won’t be going tonight anymore :( The good news is when I go next month, I won’t have to carry (as much) water! :)

All the cool kids are biking to Baltimore tomorrow to drink beer if your leg is feeling better.

    Counterpoint: I might be going.

Clarifying statement: All the cool kids *and provisionally cool kids* are biking to Baltimore tomorrow. Cool kid status will be confirmed upon successful rendition of the official song of the ride tomorrow.

Oh, I saw the “cool kids” qualifier, figured I wasn’t worthy, and shed a tear.

This old fogie is gonna go ahead and do the ‘packing trip tonight with his aging hip issue, and friendless :) Maybe I’ll see you kiddos tomorrow night.

Teensy bit jealous, but I will drown my sorrows at Right Proper after work. It’s entirely possible I’ll need to leave before the official start of the happy hour, but I’ll still be right and proper.

Arrived after sunset but was still able to set up my tent in the afterglow.

Saw at least 5 other bike campers along the way, but luckily there’s just two at the campsite I chose, and I set up on the opposite end.

My family went car camping (my son is 3) this weekend at Antietam Creek Campground on the C&O. The campsite pump wasn’t working yet, but we brought water so it wasn’t an issue. The thing Antietam Creek has going for it is that it’s 20 tent sites can be reserved in advance, online. It’s about 10 miles north of Harper’s Ferry, so it’s a good basecamp for sightseeing rides. I was tempted to bring my new Rivendell on a car rack so that I could ride the 70 miles back to Arlington yesterday afternoon by myself. But the bike doesn’t come first. :)

Some of the new gear I was trying for the first time:

    1. Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2 with MTNGLO – very light, airy, but a little big for 1 person. I got this size so my wife and I will have a little more room. Didn’t use the fly because I didn’t think it would rain. The built in light is swank. The poles were a little long for my frame bag, but I was able to wrestle them in. Shouldn’t be a problem if you have a non-weird bike and non-weird frame bag
    2. Big Agnes Air Core Ultra pad – super cushy, a little heavy
    3. Big Agnes Skeeter SL20 sleeping bag – hot for that night’s weather. I love how it has the sleeping pad holder so you don’t keep sliding off of it.
    4. Jones Truss fork packs – very specific for this fork, but if you have one, these are awesome. Very stable, easy to get into and holds a lot of gear.
    5. Foxelli camping stove – uber small, cheap, and works well

One thing to note about camping at the Horsepen Branch campsite is that you should probably bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. I forgot mine, and woke up at 3:50am because there were police sirens going off on the other side of the river (thanks Virginia!), then airplanes came roaring through at 6:30am (again, thanks!). Virginia, with all its policing and planing so early in the morning, sheesh! (wink)

One thing I dig about riding through the city on my way home is the all the choices of yummy food after the long ride :)

    Hey,
I’ve been biking for a long time, and just got into bikepacking in 2017. I rode the Pittsburgh to DC GAP/C&O ride in September with my brother and I’m looking forward to riding it again in the Spring at a faster pace. Has anyone heard anything about the Parks Department stopping treating the water at the Hiker/Biker campsites along the C&O? There was an announcement on the GAP Trail website about that.

Somebody else mentioned this to me a few weeks ago, so I looked it up. Sounds like the pumps are turned off for the season. Welp, I’m glad I didn’t go last weekend like I planned! :)
