Not to detract from the main discussion here, but I bought a new carbon fork from Nashbar for $80 a few years back. And you should be able to get a set of brake calipers for less than that if those need to be replaced. Not saying it is worth it, but you should be able to get back on the road for a less than $150, not to mention $400. I am guessing that the brakes may be the tip of that maintenance-starved iceberg, though …
