And it’s a wrap! 61 players gave me their Bingo cards before midnight. Items will be posted through edits to this post, in a reply to this post, and on the Game #3 Call Sheet tab of the Google Sheet I use for tracking.

Items (note you must take a picture of the actual items, not pictures of artwork depicting them):

    Round 1:

    • January 1 – Balloon. No yard inflatables, as that is a separate Bingo item.
    • January 2 – Flag (other). This means a flag that is not a country, state, or military flag. (DC flags are considered state flags and POW flags are considered military for this purpose.)
    • January 3 – Shop (ice cream). This should be a specialty ice cream shop, not for example a supermarket or restaurant that happens to sell ice cream.
    • January 4 – Graffiti
    • January 5 – Little Free Library. Need not be a branded one. Any little leave a book/take a book box will do.
    • January 6 – Tennis court
    • January 7 – Analog clock
    • January 8 – Mural
    • January 9 – Garage (freestanding). This must be a garage for an individual house, not for example a public parking garage.
    • January 10 – Horse. This must be an actual live horse.
    • January 11 – Car (yellow).  Must be an actual car, not for example a school bus or a commercial van.
    • January 12, 2024 – Mosque. Can be a photo of either the building or the sign, but you must identify the building in your post if there is no name shown.
    • January 13 – Sign (county line). In the interest of not disadvantaging the already disenfranchised, I’ll accept DC line signs as “county line” signs. However, these must be signs at the boundary, not signs directing you to the boundary.
    • January 14 – Dog. This must be an actual live dog.
    • January 15 – Flag (country). As usual, this must be an actual flag, not a flag design on a sign, etc.
    • January 16 – Basketball goal
    • January 17 – Cat. This must be an actual live cat. However, anything in the cat family (lions, tigers, etc.) counts.
    • January 18 – Shop (taco).
    • January 19 – Tree (coniferous)
    • January 20 – Bumper sticker.  I’ll accept ones intended to be applied to a bumper, which are attached to the back of a vehicle, even if they are not on the actual bumper.
    • January 21 – Flag (state). In the interest of not disadvantaging the already disenfranchised, I’ll accept DC flags as “state” flags.
    • January 22 – Fence (privacy).  Needs to be at least a 6ft fence you can’t see through (typically wood; could be brick/stone).
    • January 23, 2024 – Sign (park). This is a sign for a park (as in green space), not a sign related to parking.
    • January 24 – Shop (bubble tea). This should be a specialty bubble tea place, not just a restaurant that sells bubble tea among other things.
    • January 25 – License plate (vanity)
    • January 26 –  Temple.  Given that “synagogue” and “church” are separate items, I’m allowing only a Mormon temple or a temple that is neither a synagogue nor a church (e.g., Buddhist).

End of Round 1; @bikesnick wins!

    Round 2:

    • January 27 – Flag (other). This means a flag that is not a country, state, or military flag. (DC flags are considered state flags and POW flags are considered military flags for this purpose.)
    • January 28 – Flag (state). In the interest of not disadvantaging the already disenfranchised, I’ll accept DC flags as “state” flags.
    • January 29 – Fence (iron)
    • January 30 – Custom mailbox.  Needs to be a unique mailbox; not something you can buy at the store. Not a “wrap” over a std mailbox. Not just a big pole/post housing a mailbox. There are plenty of good examples out there. Go find one.
    • January 31 – Skate park
    • February 1 – Car (custom paint).  Photo of a car w/custom paint job. Anything questionable will be arbitrarily decided by me. No wraps or business logos/printing. Private car; some custom, after-market paint job.
    • February 2 – Traffic cone. Take a pic of one of those heavy traffic cones (typically orange). Sorry, a little sport cone from a soccer field (or similar) or a traffic barrel doesn’t count.
    • February 3 – Named creek/river.  Let us know the name of the river/creek you found (big enough that its name is on Google Maps).
    • February 4 – Hospital
    • February 5 – Tunnel.  From outside or inside. A tunnel designed for transportation (auto, train, people, etc.).
    • February 6 – Sign (w/pic of bike).  This means a sign that has a pic of a bike on it, not a picture that includes a random sign and also your bike.  However, the sign cannot be a bike route sign or a share the road sign, since those are separate items.
    • February 7 – Plane. As in airplane, not an inclined plane. Must be a real one, not an artwork.
    • February 8 – Named pond/lake.  Let us know the name of the pond/lake you found (big enough that its name is on Google Maps).
    • February 9 – Tennis court.
    • February 10 – Tree (deciduous).
    • February 11 – Garage (freestanding). This must be a garage for an individual house, not for example a public parking garage.
    • February 12 – Sign (bike route).  It needs to say “bike route” on it. Signs for bike trails, etc. will not satisfy this one.
    • February 13 – Temple.  Given that “synagogue” and “church” are separate items, I’m allowing only a Mormon temple or a temple that is neither a synagogue nor a church (e.g., Buddhist). Can be a photo of either the building or the sign, but you must identify the building if there is no name shown.
    • February 14 – Flag (military). POW flags count as military for this purpose.
    • February 15 – Tree (coniferous). Most, but not all, coniferous trees are also evergreens, and vice versa.
    • February 16 – Xmas ornament. This can be any Christmas decoration EXCEPT Christmas lights & yard inflatables (since those are each other Bingo squares).
    • February 17 – Mascot.  Unlike the other items, which require the actual thing rather than a picture of the thing, this could be either an actual live mascot (e.g., the Oriole bird running around the field) or a picture of one on a sign (e.g., Colonel Sanders on a KFC sign).  However, it should not be on an actual item (e.g., don’t go into a supermarket and find Tony the Tiger on a box of cereal).
    • February 18 – Bird house.
    • February 19 – Train. Any train that actually runs (Amtrak, Metro, children’s miniature train). No train cars being used as restaurants, train artwork, stationary trains being used as museum exhibits.
    • February 20 – Yard inflatable.  Must be inflated. I’m talking about holiday decoration inflatables.
    • February 21 – Analog clock. Photograph an analog clock (real one) on your ride. Can’t be a watch (yours or anyone you find).
    • February 22 – Car (yellow).  Must be an actual car, not for example a school bus or a commercial van.

End of Round 2; @LhasaCM wins!

    Round 3:

    • February 23 – Shop (ice cream).  This should be a specialty ice cream shop, not for example a supermarket or restaurant that happens to sell ice cream.
    • February 24 – Sign (with pic of bike).  This means a sign that has a pic of a bike on it, not a picture that includes a random sign and also your bike.  However, the sign cannot be a bike route sign or a share the road sign, since those are separate items.
    • February 25 – Graffiti.
    • February 26 – Shop (bubble tea).  This should be a specialty bubble tea place, not just a restaurant that sells bubble tea among other things.
    • February 27 – Statue (person).  Must be a statue of a person or sculpture that includes a person.
    • February 28 – Sign (bike route). It needs to say the exact words, “bike route,” on it. Signs for bike trails, etc. will not satisfy this one.
    • February 29 – Tunnel.  From outside or inside. A tunnel designed for transportation (auto, train, people, etc.).
    • March 1 – Football field.  Must be American football, since soccer goal is a separate item.
    • March 2 – Yard inflatable.  Must be inflated and sitting on the ground (i.e., not a balloon that hangs from something or floats in the air). I’m talking about holiday decoration inflatables.
    • March 3 – Horse.  This must be an actual live horse.
    • March 4 – Named creek/river.  Let us know the name of the river/creek you found (big enough that its name is on Google Maps).
    • March 5 – Soccer goal.
    • March 6 – Traffic cone. Take a pic of one of those heavy traffic cones (typically orange). Sorry, a little sport cone from a soccer field (or similar) or a traffic barrel doesn’t count.
    • March 7 – Fence (privacy).  Needs to be at least a 6ft fence you can’t see through (typically wood; could be brick/stone).
    • March 8 – Shop (brewery).
    • March 9 – Post Office. US Postal Service or foreign country equivalent.
    • March 10 – Custom mailbox.  Needs to be a unique mailbox; not something you can buy at the store. Not a “wrap” over a std mailbox. Not just a big pole/post housing a mailbox. There are plenty of good examples out there. Go find one.
    • March 11 – Car (yellow). Must be an actual car, not for example a school bus or a commercial van.
    • March 12 – Shop (coffee).  Needs to be a place that is primarily a coffee shop (not a shop that happens to sell coffee).
    • March 13 – Xmas ornament.  This can be any Christmas decoration EXCEPT Christmas lights or yard inflatables (since those are each other Bingo squares).
    • March 14 – Train.  Any train that actually runs (Amtrak, Metro, children’s miniature train). No train cars being used as restaurants, train artwork, stationary trains being used as museum exhibits.
    • March 15 – Tree (coniferous). Tree that produce cones.  Most, but not all, coniferous trees are also evergreens, and vice versa.

End of Round 3; @NancyT wins!

If this item is on your Bingo card, here’s the procedure:

    • Find and photograph the item while on a bike ride.
    • Add the photo to your Strava ride, and hashtag your ride #Bingo.
    • Come back here and post the photo in this thread by the end of the day after you find the item. Your post would just read something like “1/1/24 Balloon” with a photo of a balloon. Please use the date for which the item was called, not the date you find it, if different.
    • Click on the square with that item (computer) or press on it (phone) to mark an X in that square.
    • When you have 5 Xs in a row, come back here and post that you have Bingo.

If  the forum will not let you post a picture, just

    • Tag your Strava ride with #Bingo.
    • Add your photo to your Strava ride.
    • Post here and say what item you found.

I will check your Strava ride and give you credit.

I still prefer that you post a picture here if you can, since it reduces the effort I have to make to verify.  But I don’t want anyone losing credit due to forum issues.

    **********************************************************************************************************************************

If you don’t remember the URL for your Bingo card, it is listed here. You can also see on the Game #3 Call Sheet tab there the items for each day. You can find any item the day it is called, or any subsequent day.

I have followed or requested to follow everyone who is playing. If I need permission, please give it so that I can verify your entries.

    **********************************************************************************************************************************
Basic premise: You can claim a Bingo spot on or after the day that “thing” is called.

    • Daily (starting Jan 1) I will announce the proverbial “bingo number” to the forum (which will actually be an object/thing).
    • If a player finds and photographs the “thing” on their ride that day or a future day, they mark that spot on their Bingo card.
    • The rides for each item must be on different days. For example, if you miss that balloon on day 1, you can find a balloon and post it on day 2. But if you do, your ride to find that flag must be on day 3 or later.
    • You can post the day of your ride or the next day. But no sandbagging (saving up a bunch of rides and then waiting until you’ve almost achieved Bingo to post). If you do not post your item by the end of the day after you find it, it will not count and you will have to go find it again to get credit.
    • First player to find 5 things making “BINGO” (i.e., five items in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row) wins.

Key additional info (and I’ll probably add more later to clarify based on questions I get):

    • You must post the photo of the object taken during your ride to this thread.
    • You must include the photo in your Strava ride for the day and #Bingo in your ride title.
    • I will request to follow everyone who plays this game on Strava so that I can verify their entries. If you have Strava set so that you have to approve people following you, please approve me. I’m Carol ✊ on Strava.
    • First person to announce BINGO to this thread (and I verify their entries) wins.

    Other thoughts:

    • I plan to post the day’s Bingo# the prior evening.
    • Most objects are likely self-explanatory, and I will provide a little more detail with each day’s announcement.
    • There are 75 objects/items in total and 25 are randomly selected for each player’s Bingo card.
    • Here is the link to the Google sheet I use to track what’s been called, and everyone’s card.
    • If you win, I’ll verify you submitted valid photos on the day when you found the item (which must be on or after the day it was called).
    • If you want to cheat and ruin the fun for everyone, I’m sure you can.
    • Prize will likely be a gift card of some kind.

Have fun and let me know any questions!

Ok I have another temple but I will argue that who am I to tell people it’s a temple, or a church or anything else they want to call themselves.  It had temple in the name.

But here is another temple called Sri Hanuman Temple of North America (again I can’t verify its a temple but it has it in the name)  taken on the same day 2/13/24 and is on my strava ride for that day.

@cvcalhoun – sorry you’re sick. I hope you feel better soon. Thanks for running the bingo game. Because I’m sponsoring the #scavhunt, I don’t really have the same excitement about looking for something, so in the rare event that a bingo item is on my card, I get a little bit happy.

Now I’m on the fence about changing for a new card. It’s like the phone finally ringing once you give up waiting and go ahead and get in the shower…

    2/16 – Xmas Ornament

Both of these are clearly related to Christmas and are decorative. The mailbox only has a ‘wrap’ so doesn’t qualify as a custom mailbox. The banner does not qualify as a flag. If you still feel that this doesn’t count, oh well.

    I’ll accept that one.

Believe me, I’m not arguing that the first one wasn’t a temple. I’ve belonged to a couple of synagogues that were also temples in my time, and would never argue that they weren’t temples. However, the post for this one said:

Given that “synagogue” and “church” are separate items, I’m allowing only a Mormon temple or a temple that is neither a synagogue nor a church (e.g., Buddhist). Can be a photo of either the building or the sign, but you must identify the building if there is no name shown.

So a church that is called a temple is indeed a temple. But because I don’t want the same building to count for two different Bingo items, I disallowed it for the “temple” one. I allowed a Mormon one only because Mormons distinguish between a temple (used only for specific kinds of ceremonies) and a church (the one you might attend regularly), so a Mormon temple wouldn’t qualify as a church.

In any event, your second entry definitely qualifies.

Oh, I know. Your chances of something being called in the next game are exactly the same, regardless of your card. However, there are circumstances in which you might want to change cards:

    • You’re superstitious, and hope changing cards will change your luck, even though you know that’s not rational.
    • You have items on your card that you think you’d have trouble finding even if they were called. For example, if you have a card with a bunch of Xmas items on it, you might not want to try to find those in March.

@cvcalhoun Hah! I got the lecture last year on the whole church/temple/synagogue thing.  However, sometimes you gotta try with what you got.  If it doesn’t work, oh well. (Oh, and thanks for the acceptance of Xmas Ornaments.  I tried to build my case.)
