Welcome to Team 4. I will be your team captain for Freezing Saddles 2021. This is my 5th year as a registered participant, but first leading (really just doing the admin and facilitation work) a team. As you can see from my location, I am not in the DMV…so, a couple of things to consider: (a) I am 6 hours ahead, which may be a factor if we ever need to communicate via email, and I don’t reply promptly, I may already be asleep, (b) I do everything on the metric system, because there are rules, particularly #24, and (c) it may not be as cold here as there, but I can assure you the weather is far worse, with a lot of wind and rain…like nearly every day from November to April.

For the prior participants, what I am about to say will make sense, and for the new entrants on their first of many FS runs….ride everyday. Teams win based on point accumulation, and because of the way the points are calculated, not all miles are equal…clocking at least one mile per day per participant is huge. If you can get 10 per day even better, because the first 10 mile are worth the most points, with all from 11 on being valued as par, 1 for 1. I have been on the winning team twice, and in neither instance did we have a more than 2 high mileage riders; what we had was a team where all but one or two generated a good day, everyday. Think of miles as the popular vote, but “good days” with at least one mile spun out as the electoral college.

    Admin:

    1. Team assignments will be announced at the FS2021 Opening Happy Hour, but points accrual starts on 1 Jan. If you’re on my team, you’ll wake up to an email from me. Since face to face will not be physically possible due to an ocean between us and COVID still raging…we will have to get creative with team events, we set up social rides and HH, and I zoom in? We can discover this together. More to follow.

    2. The Strava Club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/808879

    3. The name and logo (on the Strava Club) are placeholders, I have some ideas, we will make this an immediate order of business. I am partial to the 4WD Unicorns, since we are supposed to be “driving in all weather and conditions and cyclists in snow and sludge are mythical, right?” That said, all ideas are welcome and we can decide this once we are assembled.

    4. Subscribe to thread by clicking the drop down “Thread Tools” to the top right of the banner directly above my post, select “subscribe” and choose your preference for notification. I recommend a minimum of weekly notification.

    5. So again: RIDE EVERY DAY! Let’s max out the FS team point system (electoral college) by getting each of us on the boards everyday….1 mile does it, but if you’re already out, go for 9 and maximize the point awarding. Everything after that is for you (popular vote tally), though we will benefit also.

Team 4 members, this is our thread…in reality, it is probably the tertiary mode of communication since email and potentially SMS is some much easier to manage and interface with. But the thread is here, and we can use it if necessary. Go ahead and follow the thread, with the instruction in the post above, or make a post and you should be automatically set to follow and receive notifications of added posts, etc.
