Throwing another idea in the ring.
- Get the list of final results from this year: https://freezingsaddles.org/leaderboard/individual_text
- Chunk it out into groups of 10, starting #1-10, #11-20, #21-30, etc.
- The middle team’s points are 1 mile = 1 point
- The top team’s points are 1 mile = .1 point
- The last team’s points are 1 = 10 points
- All the inbetween teams are scaled on that
See, that was easy
PS – how the hizzity did I end up in 4th place? That ain’t right.
How would that work for new participants?

ParticipantWell, if we wanted to really make it fare, we could just spin the Wheel of Morality for every day you ride your bike, and whatever it lands on – that’s your points for the day. For days you dont ride, you are deduced the number of points for the number of the day of the month that it is. If the temperature is below ten degrees, then you are scored on a logarithmic scale. If the temperature is above 70, then you are in Australia and your points dont count anyway. We can start with a handicap. Something like your number of posts to the forum – and you dont get any points until your miles exceeds the number of posts you have made. Top riders will be clumped together and told to go Everesting on Sisyphus Hill.

Well, it appears that I am out of the running.

It doesn’t, and it’s a terrible idea

No, no, no. Just trying to help you iron out the wrinkles.

ParticipantI propose that a small group of longtime participants – a cabal, if you will – gets together nightly. We review each ride and assign points based on how many points we want to assign. All of RCannon’s rides are worth -10 unless he involved a puppy. Bob James gets one point for each 500 miles. Rides to breweries get 100 bonus points.

I’m probably not playing this year, but this system would pull me back in.

Does the counter even work any more? Ah…. apparently it does.

In for the “cabal”.

ParticipantMeh. It’s a COMPETITION! I would not divide further. If people want to ride casually, then they can without the further gnashing of teeth / data and randomization of BAFS Admin folks.
Also I support Max 150 MPW. I know a lot of folks who stopped riding when they reached 100 last year.
Local teams would be nice, but, on top of the milage balance, feels like a lot of work for someone other than myself.

ParticipantI think I’m late to the party… is it too late to sign up? If not, where is the sign-up form?

Have no fear, you’re too early to sign up!

Your saddle may already have frozen these past 2 days, but Freezing Saddles does not officially begin until January 1.

ParticipantCool, thanks. When does team sign-up open, and when does assignment happen?
