    Yeah, I know it’s still summer weather but since it’s now technically fall I thought this would be as good a time as any to open up a discussion thread so that whatever we decide to do for 2020 won’t be a last minute discussion/decision.

    NOTE that this is a DISCUSSION thread, not a DECISION thread. Any and all discussion, criticism (constructive and polite), suggestions, etc. are welcome. But that doesn’t mean that just because it’s discussed that it means that’s what we’re going to do. What we end up doing will depend on a lot of different factors, including (but not necessarily limited to): willing and able volunteers, feasibility to implement, sensibility, understandability (is that even a word?), etc.

    So with that in mind … Some things we’d like to hear from y’all about (but not limited to just these few things):

    1. What did you think of the mileage cap (for team points, not individual points)? Scrap? Keep? Keep but up the mileage?

    2. What do you think about trying to make the teams more “local,” i.e., teammates from the same area? But still trying to “balance” the teams (based on past Freezing Saddles participation) so that no one team is “stacked” with high mileage riders?

    3. Conversely, we could just make team assignments totally random. I think Steve O has done some analysis to indicate that this doesn’t necessarily change the results in terms of differences between teams.

    4. What do you think about smaller size teams? Last year we had 19 teams with 10 riders each. It’s been suggested that Freezing Saddles is more competitive with smaller teams because every team member’s miles (or lack thereof) count more. Is something like 6 riders too small for a team?

    5. Keep the current point system? 10 points for the first ride mile of the day (as an incentive to ride) but 1 point for every mile afterwards.

    Again, it’s not going to be possible to do everything (or maybe even many of the things) that people suggest. But this is your chance to discuss and make suggestions for the above or anything else.

    Not quite. The 65 points includes the 10 bonus points for riding. So a single 10-mile ride, 2 5-mile rides (or 10 1-mile rides) in a day results in a daily score of 65.
    10 (daily bonus) + 10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 = 65

    A system so complicated that various smart peoples come to different numerical conclusions. Only around DC could this be. Glad I’m just here to ride my biek.

    But that’s why we let the computer calculate the points. Python is better at math than chuxtr

    We makes the point competition a function of the number of spokes that complete a full rotation. The more spokes your wheels have (and the more wheels you have), the higher you score!

    FWIW, the registration form is clearer. It says:

    Ten points are given for every day someone rides at least a mile, and additional points as follows: 10 points for mile 1, 9 points for mile 2, 8 points for mile 3, etc. Miles 10 and over each day earn one point each.

    Newbie question: Somewhere I read that Freezing Saddles is for folks in the Washington DC metro area, but on Strava there are folks in the Strava club that aren’t even in this hemisphere. Is this a wide-open Strava club? Doesn’t including folks that live in summery climes during the competition defeat the purpose? Just a question…

    The main Strava club is open to all but that’s only one part of the registration process. There tend to be a lot of people from outside the area each year who join the Strava club because they sign up for lots of clubs regardless of location, but do not actually sign up for or participate in FS. In my view, the fun is meant for people in the DC metro area (plus some former participants who have moved away but still join in the fun from afar).

    Quick RULES Question (related to SMUGNESS Pointless Prize). Is is legal to WALK your bike, if you encounter perilous, icy, snowy conditions? I admit your average speed may suffer. What is the current opinion on this?

    If ebikes were previously ‘legal’, any way that you can propel the bike forward counts.

    If you take your bike on metro that does NOT count, though there was a pointless prize for that last year.

    A pointless prize for ferry rides would be amusing if anyone wants to do that.
