I imagine that if you went out about two in the morning and poked into the cooler of one of guys that fish at night, you’d find some of the champagne of beers. (I seem to recall it was Miller High Life bottles).

I don’t know if a permit is needed from NPS, but you also need to make sure that you turn off audio recording since in Virginia you have to be one of the parties in recorded conversations.

I saw signs on Beach Drive yesterday showing that the road will be closed between Joyce Road and Tilden Street/Park Road starting August 28th.

I noticed yesterday that they have put a new mirror in on the Custis at the 90deg turn at Glebe/I-66 ramp location. It was all fogged over yesterday, but not today. It is exactly what I asked them NOT to put in – the tiny mirror like they have at the I-66 90deg turn at BonAir. Sigh. It isn’t very helpful until you are about a foot from the intersection which isn’t really enough time or space to react. But, there is something there now.

Chesterbrook Rd between Glebe and 41st has been cold-planed from curb to curb. It is groovy (but not in the 60’s sense) and gravelly, and the drivers are just as impatient as usual. So be careful.

At 10:30pm tonight I encountered road work on Key Bridge: rightmost southbound lane and upstream sidewalk blocked. I didn’t look over to see what the crews were doing. Perhaps they’ll be gone before rush hour?

After approaching my usual way whenever coming from anywhere uptown in the late evening (vehicular left off M Street onto the upstream sidewalk), the only choice was to take a full lane in the car traffic. So I treated myself to my first-ever experience taking a lane in traffic while riding solo across a Potomac River Bridge. (On a CaBi no less!) I did see peds and bikes using the downstream sidewalk, but it would have been difficult for me to get to that side given my approach.

It didn’t feel scary at all actually. Drivers were slower than usual due to the road work on the north half of the bridge. I was able to keep up with the cars ahead of me until over halfway across. By that point another southbound lane opens up and drivers could pass easily in the left lane. And the traffic signals at the next few intersections on Fort Myer Drive in Arlington prevented anyone from speeding excessively thereafter anyway.

They are painting the fence. They uninstall the fence, put on temporary cyclone fencing, paint it off-site, and reinstall later.
