I tried a rookie race last year at DCCX. It seems like an easy process as long you’re not worried about winning or anything. Just start at the back, wait for the traffic to clear, and move up if you can/wish later.

It looks like a lot of fun but I don’t have a CX bike. Maybe next year. Then again that DCCX rookie race might be okay on a hybrid?

In Cat 4 you can race on a mountain bike, assuming hybrid as well.

I’m not a racer but something of a power spectator.

Here’s a great list of cross races in the Mid-Atlantic.
    http://www.cxhairs.com/2012/07/10/mid-atlantic-region-2012-cyclocross-calendar/

Tacchino and DCCX are part of the MABRA Super 8 series, so you might want to check out the other races in that.

Also, DCMTB http://www.dcmtb.com/clinics-2012/, The Bike Lane, and Bike Doctor are all running cross clinics right now, so check out their websites for dates ‘n such.

If you’re doing DCCX, you might consider going to one of the DCMTB clinics b/c then you get to ride the actual course.

If you’re in the Arlington area on Wednesday nights, I have a friend who does a practice at Gravely Point I can hook you up with.

This will be my first season doing Cyclocross racing so I’m both excited and anxious about the season starting. I’m doing races both around DC and in the Philly area (where I still have family). Any like minded crazy people on the form? I have only registered for three races so far, all listed below.

    Tacchino – Sept 9th
Charm City (only doing Sunday) – Sept 23rd
    Whirlybird – Sept 29th

Any other races in the area in the next few months, besides DCCX (which hasn’t opened for registration yet), that I should know about?

Any tips for a total noob are welcome as well. I expect much pain and failure on my part during the races.

For those who don’t know what Cyclocross is, Wikipedia has all the answers.

I’m also going to race for the first time this year. I can’t do Tacchino bc I’ll be out supporting someone most excellent at the Nations Tri, and other obstacles for a few weeks, but definitely DCCX. I will definitely break my face at some point. But it’ll be fun!

I finally found one that works for my schedule – going to do this one at Rosaryville.

Cantilevers — wouldn’t be cross without that distinctive squeal.

I have a question for those with CX experience – I’ve been invited to go do Iron Cross this coming weekend and I’d like to give it a try. Haven’t done any CX before, and its been a long time since I’ve done any mountain biking. I wouldn’t be racing, but starting at the back and just looking to finish (100k).
I’d be riding my Surly Disc Trucker and replacing the stock Conti road tires with some CX loaner tires. I’m not sure if subjecting the disc trucker to the harder rockier parts of the course is a good idea. Its set up with Disc brakes, and its not terribly heavy so I don’t mind hauling it around the tougher sections of the course…
…but its a touring frame set up with 700c wheels and road pedals.

So – bad idea to take the Trucker on a CX course? If I do decide to go for it, is there anything I should change this week (besides tires) to make it trail-ready?

OK, just signed up for DCCX CAT4…

Any suggestions on tires? I’m assuming somewhere between morning wet slippery grass and sloppy wet mud. In either case my busted out Hutchinson Piranha’s aren’t going to cut it.
