ParticipantSo, every year, our extended family rents a home in the Outer Banks… I came up with the idea today of letting my family drive down, and me spending the next couple days riding down… Anybody here try something like this from the DC area?

ParticipantNo, but you definitely should.

ParticipantI would definitely rather ride my bike than drive the screaming kids. But I doubt my wife would support that option
You should definitely do it, if you’ve gotten the spousal support. No question. Is it like 400 miles? That would be a long 2 days, but probably doable if riding a century now isn’t a big effort. You may not be able to do anything but lie on the floor once you arrive. — I can just see how that would play out for me

ParticipantDefinitely do it. Obviously the number of days you take is up to you, and just depends on how hard you want to push yourself. How you design the route will be pretty important too. Can you follow a pre-mapped route like the ACA Atlantic Coast route for most of it?

It’s just under 300 miles to Kitty Hawk.

Looking at resources I found online so far, I could take Bike Route 1 to BR-76, and then to the Virginia Capital Trail. That would get me to Norfolk… The biggest hurdle I’m finding right now is getting from Norfolk to the other side of Virginia Beach…

ParticipantI’ve seen a lot of cyclists on the road toward Sandridge, but I’m not sure how you get from there south to Corolla. That’s just beach for like 20 miles I think. I know google maps thinks there is a route, but my few times hiking back there I don’t remember seeing one. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. But even then, the road in Corolla is basically sand too.
You can’t really cross the tunnels or bridges down by Hampton Roads so I presume you would have to cross at the end of the VCT by Jamestown on that ferry there. I would presume going through Norfolk means you know a way around the beach issue I mentioned above because otherwise I can only figure you go around the south side and come up around Bowers Hill to then go down the old 168.
Take photos and tell us all about it though as that would be awesome.
