On Wednesday, November 9, I will be helping to give bike lights to passersby in the Arlandria neighborhood for the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and GO Alex (formerly known as Local Motion, the multimodal outreach program from the city of Alexandria), but I need help with doing this.

Goal: to provide bike lights to residents of the Arlandria neighborhood, a lower-income area which could use the assistance
    Date: Wednesday, November 9
    Time: 5:30-8:00 pm
Place: Cora Kelly Recreation Center – 25 W. Reed Avenue – the cross street nearby is Commonwealth Ave

If you are willing and able to help, please send me a PM. Thank you.

The results of tonight’s bike light giveaway (I actually counted this time): 48 bike lights were handed out, and more than 75 Alexandria residents (majority from Arlandria) were informed about the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and GO Alex (2 were told about the Alexandria Spokeswomen, too). There were many appreciative people who stopped by on their way in or out of the recreation center :)

You wouldn’t happen to know where I can get one of them sweet Alexandria maps, would you? I’ve got the Arlington County Bike Map and Bicycle Comfort map both hanging in my room and would like to add to my collection.

    Also, thank you for volunteering.

I’ve picked up the Alexandria map at the Shirlington Commuter Center (along with bus maps/schedules and other pamphlets on the self-serve racks). I can’t guarantee how often they re-stock.

Note that the center is closed/doors locked on Sundays though. I think the doors remain unlocked most of Saturday even without any personnel there and probably weekday evenings as well.

You’re welcome! It was nice being able to talk to people about the different programs and groups promoting biking and walking in and around the city, including the outskirts (I mentioned that I myself was a West-Ender), and people were very receptive to learning more about them.

I found a page on the city site with an electronic version of the map and details on where you can pick up physical maps: https://www.alexandriava.gov/localmotion/info/default.aspx?id=11546

    From the site:

The updated Alexandria bike map is here! The map includes on and off-street bikeways, Capital Bikeshare stations, safety tips, useful phone numbers and resources, and more.

To obtain a printed copy, stop by your local bike shop, the Old Town Transit Shop, City Hall, or any of our recreation centers. The map is free!

Grab one soon if you want a collectors edition–I hear they’re going to be updating to a new version soon.

How much do you think my vintage Arlington Bicycle Comfort Level Map would go for in EBay?

Wow! The bike map has come a long way. Apparently the Pentagon also used to be a roughly Pentagon shaped squiggle.

I unfortunately was not yet born in 1979 to get my copy.
