SUNDAY, June 14th: CRYSTAL CITY
Registration Tent – Near the Start/Finish line at 2011 Crystal Drive 6:00am – 8:00amJust remember that the ride officially starts at 7 and ends at 10, so if you don’t pick up your packet and attach your rider number and timing chip before 7, you’ll be at a time disadvantage depending on how many laps you will attempt.
FYI, The medals will be awarded as follows with the pace you need to keep for each if you use the full 3 hours:
- Bronze: 0-3 laps completed (average speed needed: 0 – 12.4 mph)
- Silver: 4-5 laps completed (average speed needed: 12.5 – 18.6 mph)
- Gold: 6+ laps completed (average speed needed: 18.7+ mph)

ParticipantFirst 3 laps were fine, next 2 felt a little tougher, and eventually the last lap was a real challenge due to the heat, humidity, and fatigue, but I finished 6! A winner is you!

The toughest part was getting home. I was limping along 4MR going at single digit speeds for the 6 or so miles to get back to my apartment. I did, however, get to talk to a couple of fellow cyclists on the trail who gave me words of encouragement and congratulations. My glutes were painful, but I’m doing a little better after some stretching and cooling off with cold drinks and A/C.
How did everyone else fare? I hope you all enjoyed it!

ParticipantI definitely felt the heat more this year than last. Got in 6 laps but they rolled up the timer strip early due to the late start so the official results say 5. To heck with them, I got my gold medal.

ParticipantCongrats to everyone, whether they completed one lap or six laps.
I skipped it this year. I haven’t done much real training this time, so I thought it was best not to get myself into trouble again.Last year, I went into the ride a bit undertrained but I still pushed myself on the ride. (The problems may have started in Feb. 2014 when I got myself overtrained from not eating enough during and after long workouts. I got sick and had a very elevated heart rate for two days after a workout, which should not happen. My training was haphazard in the first half of 2014.)
I think I finished 5 laps last year. I felt the lack of training. Then I did something very stupid. I did a hard run hill workout just a couple days later. The combination of undertraining (which affects performance as well as post-ride recovery), the long duration of the hard effort, the lack of post-race recovery, and the run hill workout did something to the inside of my quads. While I didn’t tear anything completely, I started to feel off. I started getting minor injuries to the quads where they would give out in just half an hour, or it would take me 10 days or more to recover from any rides or run workouts, which is NOT normal. I tried to do a limited amount of training but I stopped running completely by August and I only biked once a week or so.
Then I tried to gut out the Nation’s Triathlon in September, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to run the entire distance. I’ve finished the race several times in the past, but last year, my quads started giving out, even with walk breaks for the first time. Then I had to walk completely for the last 3 miles, because of the quads. I took a calculated risk, knowing that I probably wouldn’t do any permanent damage, because it was a muscle injury, but I knew the race would lengthen the recovery time before I finally felt normal again. My quads didn’t recover fully until I took a few months off completely in the fall and early winter. I felt sluggish after I started running and riding again in January, but I started to feel normal by March.
The toughest part was not being able to go out for an easy 30-min. ride any time I wanted to during the fall. With the quad injuries, even doing something like that would set me back a few weeks. So I only rode once or twice between early Sept. and late Nov.
Bottom line: If you rode hard today, be cautious with the recovery. Don’t do any hard workouts, sessions or activities for the next week. If you ride, take it easy and make it shorter than usual, if possible. Avoid tough hills this week. While a few people might be able to do hard workouts or long rides soon after, many probably shouldn’t do that. Post-race recovery weeks are a good idea. Don’t be like me last year and get yourselves injured.

ParticipantMy normal pace on trails/roads during longer rides is 14-15mph so going into it, I wasn’t sure if I’d get six laps, but I made it! I figured have a faster pace, but really surprised I averaged 18.8mph and held over 19mph for as long as I did.
First three laps were fine, but I felt myself dropping off pretty hard by the sixth. That last lap was more mental than physical.
Lap Detail:

1 28:48.02 19.4mph 9.300
2 27:55.68 20.0mph 18.600

4 30:00.79 18.6mph 37.200

Participant@PotomacCyclist, good advice on taking it easy. I will certainly be doing just that for the next week (family will be in town, so it’ll be a bit easier not having time to work out).
My results show how much I started to struggle in that last lap (I was glad I had built up extra time from doing sub-30 minute laps). Oddly, when searching for my name, the first result is blank while the second has the data.
Lap Detail
Lap Time Pace Dist
1 27:55.53 20.0mph 9,300
2 26:45.93 20.9mph 18,600
3 28:21.04 19.7mph 27,900
4 29:32.26 18.9mph 37,200
5 31:48.87 17.5mph 46,500
6 33:27.57 16.7mph 55,800Clock Time 2:57:51
Want to know the funny thing? My time in 2014 (6 laps completed): 2:57:50
A whole year later, and I’m a full second slower :p

ParticipantIf you saw the guy on the SECOND CORNER OF THE FIRST LAP with a flat tire, that was me… LOL.. After fixing the flat, I spent the first two laps working through people looking for anyone to hook up with… Ended up doing all five laps I completed solo, no drafting or anything… which kinda sucked… but for my first time attempting something like this, I’ll take my fancy silver medal!!
Lap Time Pace Dist
1 40:56.48 13.6mph 9.300

ParticipantTo all who did the Classic today: make sure you replace your electrolytes! You sweated a lot more than you think and drinking plain water isn’t gone fix you up properly. If you have a headache that won’t go away or feel excessively tired or sluggish, your electrolytes are low. (I’ve learned this the hard way). Guzzling some Gatorade or similar drink will fix you right up. Also, replace your potassium! Eat a banana or two.
Congrats of the hard laps!!!

We did see you and made that exact comment, “That sucks – 0.7 miles in.” Glad you recovered. Congrats!
