ParticipantI made my six, but there was something funky going on with my timing chip. It only recorded parts of four laps and said the fourth lap took me almost two and a half hours. The overall time was right, but if you add up the four recorded laps, it was almost four and a half hours. Sigh, it seems like there is always a timing issue if you are not one of the ELITE riders.
Saw several Washington Area Bike Forum members and rode a few times with Rod, until he decided to drop me and finishing four and a half minutes ahead of me.

ParticipantAs promised “Team Waldo meets the Cutters”, or as we preferred Team “5 well dressed guys moving at a moderate pace”. Regardless, the challenge was a blast again this year, lots of sitings (SteveC, BobCo, PeteD, kathy, etc), lots of “Dickie” and “Go Cutters” screams, tons of cowbells and spectators… good time for all.

ParticipantI didn’t realize what jerseys team Waldo Cutters was wearing. You all blew by me going up to the Air Force Memorial on the fourth lap (hmmm, a repeat of last year without the flat tire). Good job all!

Thanks for the link! Bib995
I won, well, that is to say I had fun and got to ride with some good folks. Did not have to do a premature sprint to the finish ether. How can so much fun hurt too?

Nice crank! You were moving. I got caught by myself on the last lap and felt like I was alone in a windy desert.
Looking at the times, just curious, does anyone know the guy who came in first. Looks like he crushed everybody on the final lap with 27mph average. He had to do the entire final lap solo.June 9, 2014 at 8:06 pm #1003681sethpo

There were a few times a group would catch me and I’d hook on and then it would slow down too much and break apart on that little hill. I guess I wasn’t aggressive enough to find the right speed for me. I really don’t think this kind of riding is my cup of tea though. I like being on the hilly country roads.

ParticipantI went into the Challenge Ride expecting to get a silver, perhaps finish 5 laps if I could, but as I looked at the timer at the end of the first lap which was slower due to the initial crowding being at about 31 minutes, I figured I’d try for gold. (6 lap Gold: average 30 min/lap, 5 lap Silver: average 36 min/lap, 4 lap Silver: average 45 min/lap). I don’t think I’ve ever pushed myself so hard in a ride, but biking with so many other people who were also testing themselves really motivated me to push harder, and I managed to complete my 6th lap for the gold with only 8 seconds to spare!

During the ride, I heard Dickie’s voice which I swear is the only one of its kind, so I shouted out to him and even hitched a ride with his team for a few hundred feet before the speed was too much to maintain. After the ride, I ran into Cathy, Rod, Steve, and (my mind is blanking right now) which was cool even though I was just leaving. I had a lot of fun with this event and will definitely participate next year, too!
The biggest mistake I made was after finishing where I stopped instead of riding around a bit to cool down. Cue the muscles tightening up, and I had a very painful and slow ride back to my apartment near Ballston (it was pathetic, but I kept going at my ridiculously slow pace). Of course, after freshening up and taking an unplanned hour long nap (seriously, I meant to just rest for a few minutes, but instead quickly passed out) I then decided to bike to and from Springfield to go swimming with my brother and his family (my nieces and nephew had me occupied the whole time, but a good uncle doesn’t turn down this kind of fun!). Needless to say, this afternoon I will be taking a nice, looooooooooong nap!

Glad you hitched on for a while, it was great to see you. Yeah… the accent is a total mess these days!

ParticipantI guess I came in last place. There are no results for my bib number or name even though I did six laps. I guess they gave me a defective lap sensor.

You are not alone. No results for my bib number or name either. The MyLaps transponder matches the bib number too. Strange. Good thing I’ve got a Strava record of the event, but it would have been nice to see where I landed on the non-leader list.
Just for grins I’m emailing the AFA CC crew. PM your bib number and I’ll add that to my list. Same for anyone else who had the cloak of invisibility on Sunday.June 10, 2014 at 1:07 am #1003702APKhaos

That’s funny. After living here for 20 odd years I’m a bit over being asked if I’m British, which is doubly galling since I’m Australian. In Oz, they are confused but generally assume its an American accent from an obscure corner. Linguistically stateless.

ParticipantGlad to see a few forum folks out there, sorry we missed a few others. It was a glorious morning for a bike ride.

Started out with AP Kaos untill we parted ways before the U turn.
I ran the first two laps looking for a good group to just be able to pass me. Gasped up behind our own Pete D and rode with him for I think 3 to some of 6. We were blending in and out of some guys that as you also found were not hitting the hill as hard but gaining back on the other side. On lap 6 I lost Pete on a pull and desided to just burn what gas I had left.
Pete and I were chastised for passing a 3 wide chatty group on the right. The left was full and I don’t think slowing was in the best interest of the string. Pete kept spotting Dickey and the gang but even with his heads up I still missed them. -
