ABC’s of Family Biking 2013
Yes, friends, the ABC’s of Family Biking will return this year!

The event will take place on Sunday, April 28 from 11am to 1pm at the parking lot of Capitol Hill Montessori School at Logan (215 G Street NE). Once again, it will be a joint effort between Kidical Mass DC, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, and the District Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program.

We are still working on some of the final details, but I can tell you one thing: our motto for this year is BIGGER AND BETTER.

Really shouldn’t have gone to this since it only added fuel to my cargo bike desire. The Bullitt was a blast to ride and Buc at Kaspers Cargo bikes was awesome. Now to convince the wife that selling the minivan for two cargo bikes is the bees knees.

I’m glad I got a chance to try out the WeeHoo – I was really surprised at how much the weight back there affected the ride. I nearly dropped the bike getting on with the owner’s kid in the seat. I guess I should have expected it, but I really didn’t.

Anyway, great opportunity to check stuff out. Too bad my kids turned into pumpkins too early and I didn’t get a chance to talk to everyone I meant to.

It was a little wobbly up front because the steering is different, but you get used to it pretty quickly. Yeah, I want one in orange too. Kind of reminded me of snowboarding or surfing. I was surprised at how light it felt even though it is about 50lbs. It was easier to push around than the Yuba Mundo I tried a few months ago. I think the solution is to get a Bullitt for me and a longtail for my wife. Just need to find an extra $6k – $7k lying around.

I wanted to try more bikes out and participate in the Bike Train, but the 2 year old had meltdown.

It was a great event. Kudos to Megan and everyone who helped organize. And thanks to everyone who showed and told.

We took the late shift, so we missed almost everyone I was hoping to meet in person (though it was great to meet Megan and Elizabeth). Loved seeing all the different types of bikes and all the people interested in them.

After the conversations I had with families looking to get into family biking, I am even more convinced that e-assist is going to be the thing to push family biking over the hump around here. I hear it’s already all the rage in San Fran. Hopefully the next family bike event can have some e-assist models to test ride.

If you like the Bullitt, you should really try a bakfiets. Having ridden both, I think they’re both great, but the bakfiets is smoother. It’s a bit heavier, but I find it more stable at slower speeds. It’s steel and super durable (you can see lots of reviews from families in Europe that have used a bakfiets for years, even storing it outside). You can definitely order a bakfiets in orange. The big downside is you have to order the bakfiets from Brooklyn, Portland or Europe. Hopefully the next family bike event can have a bakfiets to test ride.
